In Fortnite three Austrians won the Trio Finals of the new Champion Series in Fortnite. They were the best team in Europe and took home $480,000. The three Austrians had long been regarded as top players in Fortnite – now two of them are grabbing their first major title. Young players are also winning in the USA – for Twitch streamer Tfue and World Champion Bugha, things went only moderately.
What was played? After the spectacular Fortnite World Cup, Epic announced that it would continue eSports with the “Champion Series.” The series took place in a trio format. Each region held its own tournament.
There was no “big global final” with a live event and spectacle character, just one per region.
The teams played:
- For the first 5 weeks since mid-August, they competed against each other to draw 133 finalists per region. Each week, the top teams could qualify directly. Tfue and his new partners only qualified last week. Additional teams qualified through the points system.
- Now this weekend the final was in a trio format. On the first day, 133 teams per region competed, on the second day there were only 32 teams left.
The trio format is relatively new; normally Fortnite is played solo, in duos, or in squads of four.
Austrian Favorites Finally Win
Who wins in Europe? In Europe, Thomas “Tschiinken” Hörak, Klaus “Stompy” Konstanzer and David “Aqua” Wang triumphed. They won $480,000 with a clear lead.
Tschiinken and Stompy were considered one of the strongest duos in the world before the World Cup but only placed 25th – now they have won their first major title.
The two performed excellently in the qualifying tournaments leading up to the World Cup.
Aqua, on the other hand, the third Austrian, became Duo World Champion with a Norwegian partner but left him after the World Cup. He claimed to have found someone who fits him better: Stompy.
This was viewed somewhat strangely at the time. Now, however, it seems he did everything right.
How did it go otherwise? The trio of Mongraal, mitr0 and benjyfishy ended up in 10th place. There was a major stir because Mongraal and benjyfishy made sure that Mitr0 got out of his contract.
TSM_Zexrow and Team Win USA
How are things in the USA?
The popular NA East division was won by TSM_Zexrow, Young Calculator and MackWood1x. They won $300,000. TSM_Zexrow is considered one of those “Fortnite” nerds. He had already performed impressively in the qualifiers.
Twitch streamer Turner “Tfue” Tenney and his new trio partners only placed 22nd.
World Champion Bugha won the first round but then it looked bad. He and his team ended up in 26th place.
However, it is already a great achievement for any team to be among the top 32 trios in the region and to have made it to the finals at all.
What’s next? Next, the trios will either look for a 4th player or the players will completely rebuild their teams. The next tournament will be played in squads, meaning with 4-member teams.
In Fortnite, there are only a few eSports players who are also successful as Twitch streamers:
