If tournament rules favor passive play, then the entertainment factor of a PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) match declines significantly. In a celebrity tournament, a team led by streamer Forsen emerged against tough competition. However, with a rather dull playing style.
Viewers quickly notice when teams in tournaments do not play to win but play not to lose. This is reflected in the tactics. Teams that do not want to lose avoid fights and take no risks.
- In PUBG, this means: camping and playing as passively as possible.
- For viewers, this means: boredom.
Celebrities in the tournament do not distract from the rules
The rules for PUBG tournaments are designed so that passive players have a good chance of winning the tournament. As was shown in the recent PUBG tournament, this is a disadvantage for viewers who want to see action.
For the overall score in past tournaments, it was counted how a team performed in various matches. This means that a team doesn’t necessarily have to achieve a Chicken Dinner (first place in a match) to collect points.
Some teams decided to play particularly carefully and passively, hiding for a long time and not drawing attention to themselves. If there was a chance to gather points by doing so, they played quietly and didn’t make any kills. This is what happened at the Twitch Rivals PUBG Invitational.
There, “celebrities” from the Twitch scene like Dr DisRespect, Shroud, Annemunition, and Forsen played with their teams for a prize pool of $100,000. Water tactics, like those in the following video, were included.
Winners but few kills
Team Speshimen, led by the well-known streamer Forsen, secured first place and played relatively passively. In three of the five matches, they made only two to three kills. They simply tried to survive until most of the other teams had shot each other out and eliminated each other.
With this tactic, they prevailed against teams like Lejund Skwad, led by Shroud. Shroud is known for his outstanding skill in the community. He exhibited an aggressive playstyle and eliminated Dr Disrespect, who is back in the game after his break.
In the end, it didn’t help that Shroud’s team won three matches and led significantly in kills. Forsen’s team performed just enough actions in the game to win in the end (technically). Forsen’s team Speshimen achieved 68 points and won by two points ahead of Team Lejund Skwad led by Shroud. Annemunition’s team finished in third place with 64 points.
However, there was more money for Shroud and Annemunition’s teams, who scored performance bonuses. For example, there was more money if a team made the most kills in a match.
Viewers are annoyed by the boring playstyle
Some viewers are unhappy with the results. Many criticized Forsen’s team and even called them cheaters for exploiting the rules. But Forsen can only laugh about it:
“No one complained about the rules before the final results,” he says in one of his streams after the tournament. “Because their favorites didn’t win, they spammed in the chat that the tournament was manipulated. But why would a company that hates me manipulate a tournament in my favor instead of for Shroud? That doesn’t make any sense.”
With such rules, the esports scene will continue to annoy some fans in the future. And that, even though PUBG with this new employee could have good chances in the esports scene.
