There are plenty of strong Pokémon, and especially the starters are very popular among many. However, not all starters are top fighters.
Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, and their evolutions started a trend in the red and blue editions that has persisted to this day.
Each time new Pokémon games are released, there is excitement about who the new starters will be. Because they accompany trainers from the beginning of their journey, and usually up to the end.
Moreover, many of them also have a lot to offer in battle. This is also highlighted by the YouTuber and former Pokémon world champion Wolfe “WolfeyVGC” Glick.
Wolfey became Pokémon world champion in 2016 and continues to post exciting videos on his channel that focus on Pokémon competitions.
In one of his recent videos, he dedicated himself to the starters, or more specifically: which starter is the worst. You can watch the video here:
One starter is not like the others
In the video, the expert emphasizes that most starters are quite strong, some even top-tier, and in case of doubt, at least receive special features like Dynamax forms, Mega evolutions, regional variants, or similar.
The “winner” in his ranking of the worst starters, however, has received none of that so far – and otherwise offers very little in terms of battle.
It concerns the final evolution of Chikorita, the grass starter of the second generation: Meganium. From WolfeyVGC’s point of view, it is the “worst starter of all time.”
This is particularly bitter for him because: “Unfortunately, it is one of my all-time favorite starters,” says Wolfey. “I love it because I loved Chikorita as a child, but damn, it is so bad.”
What is the problem? According to Wolfey, Meganium only has one advantage: it can withstand quite a bit. However, it has very weak offensive stats and too low speed on the other hand.
It hits weakly and slowly. And primarily with grass-type moves, although it lacks some of the most useful moves.
For example, it cannot learn Spore, Rage Powder, or Sleep Powder. In addition, it has a rather useless ability that can remove status problems, but only if the sun is shining brightly.
“In my 13 years of playing Pokémon tournaments, I have never seen a Meganium, let alone heard someone consider using it,” says Wolfey’s judgment. There are simply many more grass Pokémon that are much more useful.
His only hope would probably be a special form in the future, a Mega evolution, or something similar. So far, Meganium has none of that.
It remains to be seen whether that will ever change. One chance could be the upcoming Pokémon Legends Z-A, in which Mega evolutions will also play a role again. But this is purely speculation – it’s quite possible that Meganium will simply remain Meganium for now. What are your favorite starters, and which ones do you find particularly weak?
