The Twitch streamers Tyler “Ninja” Blevins (Fortnite) and Michael “shroud” Grzesiek (Apex Legends) have switched from Twitch to Mixer. Rumor has it that millions of dollars were at stake with these moves. Behind the deals are former employees of Twitch who recognized their opportunity.
What is going on? Since August 1, 2019, there have been significant shifts in the market of streamers. Some of the biggest names from Twitch, the dominant platform, have switched to smaller competitors or have reportedly signed big deals to stay on Twitch:

- Jack “CouRage” DunLop went to YouTube
- Disguised Toast switched to Facebook Gaming
- Lirik, DrLupo, and TimTheTatman have signed exclusive contracts with Twitch

What is behind this? A large part of the streamers who received their big payouts in recent weeks are represented by the agency Loaded.
The agency consists at key positions of former Twitch employees. The two crucial employees of Loaded come from the DOTA 2 scene.
Brandon Freytag, the founder of Loaded, and Alex Garfield, who later bought Loaded, had built up the business side of the eSports team “Evil Genius” over the years. They had their company, the agency Good Game, but sold it to Twitch in 2014.
Garfield seems unhappy with the decision. He complains on Twitter that he was “dumb enough” to sell the company in 2014. Because with that, his heart theme “eSports” apparently came to an end for him, and he couldn’t participate anymore.
The deal between Evil Genius and Twitch did not go as Garfield had envisioned for various reasons.

What happened next? While the “Evil Genius” guys were working at Twitch, they gained insight into the business’s structures. They came up with the idea to manage streamers directly and secure better conditions and deals for them.
Freytag says:
“When I founded Loaded, it was about influencers who were valuable but didn’t know their worth. There were situations where brands made a lot of money, and the influencers received nothing but free products.”

Freytag reached out to streamers LIRIK and Summit1g with $5 donations during his time at Twitch:
“I worked at Twitch for two years, and during that time I realized: eSports and gaming teams have all these sponsorship deals, and individual streamers could have the same opportunities. So I started, but not on a large scale.
I sent LIRIK and summit1g some donations to get their attention. They were the first guys I ever worked with, and they grew to become some of the biggest streamers on Twitch.”

By securing money on the side for LIRIK and summit1g, the core idea of the streamer agency Loaded began until Freytag then left Twitch and built the new company without a secure income.
Signing Ninja was actually only logical because Freytag had known him for ages: Ninja had played for the Halo team of “Evil Genius”.
How Loaded grew: Alex Garfield, formerly a partner of Freytag, also left Amazon. He then put in $9 million in venture capital at the end of 2018. He then founded the startup Popdog and first bought Loaded, along with other eSports companies. (via bloombergquint)
These decisions at the end of 2018 ultimately triggered the wave of deals in August 2019 with Ninja.
What’s next: At the beginning of 2020, the direction for Loaded is now clear. Freytag says:
“These announcements will continue to happen. We have a full roster of talent. Of course, we want to continue what we started.”

What’s behind this: The interesting thing is that Twitch has acquired people from the DOTA 2 eSports scene and brought them on board, and during their time at Twitch, they saw the opportunity to become independent from Twitch again and profit from the situation.

Anyone who has so much success and secures their “people” such strong deals automatically attracts the attention of other big streamers who also promise better conditions by working with Loaded.
