GTA 6 is set to be released in autumn 2025. A former employee of Rockstar now shares his assessment of how far the studio is with the development – and which important topics still need to be addressed.
What is the status of GTA 6? The currently most anticipated game is still a bit away. According to the latest information, GTA 6 is set to be released in autumn 2025 – we don’t know more details yet. Nevertheless, there are always wild speculations, some even claim that the moon would provide information.
This raises the question of how far Rockstar Games is with the development and whether the date can be met. At least regarding the development status, a former employee believes he can provide an assessment. After all, he was part of the studio for a long time and also worked on GTA 6.
A lot of hard work
Which developer is involved? Ben Hinchliffe worked at Rockstar as a game designer for over 12 years. During this time, he contributed to notable titles like GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and also GTA 6. Two years ago, he moved to the studio Just Add Water, known especially for the Oddworld series.
What is the assessment? In an interview on the YouTube channel GTAVIoclock, Hinchliffe was asked for his opinion on the development of GTA 6. What does he think the current status is?
The main development work is likely completed, and Rockstar is currently doing everything to “really tighten every corner.” Even though there is still about a year until release, there are many issues with such a large and extensive title. Bugs and other errors need to be fixed so that the gaming experience runs smoothly. Compared to previous titles, the pressure is significantly higher.
Another important aspect is this. He believes that:
90% of their [Rockstar’s] work is about doing things they [the players] don’t want to do. You might want someone to drive straight – ‘Please drive from A to B, just follow this car’ – and then they don’t do it. They get out of the car, or they drive there, or they shoot at that person, or they turn around and drive in the other direction.

Rockstar knows that their players enjoy breaking rules, after all, they are playing a gangster epic. Therefore, it’s important to consider all scenarios and make appropriate preparations. Hinchliffe is convinced that a good game does not block its users, but rather lets them do everything they want.
That is exactly what makes the fascination of GTA for him.
Until the release, Rockstar can do everything to optimize the game and ensure as clean and bug-free a launch as possible. It is possible that GTA 6 will be postponed for this reason because the game is simply too important for Rockstar to be released in a broken state. The high expectations unfortunately also lead to discontent: The head of Rockstar was so annoyed by insider reports and leaks that he wanted to overturn all plans for GTA 6.
