The successor to Grand Theft Auto 5, GTA 6, is rumored to have been in development for some time now. Recently, the game has made headlines with several leaks. Former Rockstar Games developer Tony Gowland has now spoken out.
Who is Tony Gowland? Tony Gowland has been in the gaming industry since 2000. His first projects included the lava level in Lego Bionicle for Argonaut Sheffield. In 2004, he started as a designer at Rockstar North and worked as a lead designer at Rockstar San Diego on Red Dead Redemption.
From 2010 to 2011, he worked as a Senior Mission Scripter. His main tasks included early missions and system scripts for GTA Online, a multiplayer based on the mainline game GTA 5.
Since 2012, Gowland has been active at several gaming companies, including The Blast Furnace, Activision, and Outplay Entertainment. Since 2015, he has been employed at Ant Workshop.
“Smaller and more compact” – Tony Gowland talks about GTA 6
What does he say about GTA 6? In an interview with PCGamesn.com, Tony Gowland talked about GTA 6 and his hopes for the game. He believes that after GTA 5, GTA 6 needs to be the exact opposite and thus smaller and more compact:
I think a smaller, but more densely populated place might bring back some of the memorable navigation that I loved so much about the original.

He also commented on the leaks that recently made headlines about GTA 6:

The only thing I’ve seen are a few snippets from the leaked material, and I quickly stopped watching it. I found it really heartbreaking for the team that all their hard work was shown to the world for the first time in such a shabby and unfinished state, and I would much rather wait for an official trailer to really get excited.

What is currently known about GTA 6? Currently, there is neither official footage nor a release date for GTA 6. Rockstar Games is tight-lipped about the future of the game series. The developer has only confirmed that the game is in development.
In September 2022, 3.4 gigabytes of alleged footage from a test build
for GTA 6 were leaked on the GTAForums
forum. Additionally, for a while, a video of a heist in Pulp Fiction style was available on Youtube.
About a year later, a new 49-second clip appeared online. This showed gameplay, main characters, and a new feature.
An official announcement from Rockstar Games regarding a GTA 6 release date is still pending. According to a financial report from Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, a release is planned between April 2024 and March 2025.
