With Black Ops Cold War, a new installment in the “Call of Duty” series has been released. We at MeinMMO would like to briefly introduce you to the story of Black Ops and link you to a suitable video with a detailed summary.
When does Black Ops Cold War take place? On November 13, the latest installment of the shooter series was released. It is set in the early 1980s and deals with the Cold War period during the Reagan administration in the USA.
In the storyline campaign, you act as an elite operator, experiencing battles almost from the front row and hunting down the mysterious Soviet spy named Perseus.
Your journey takes you to numerous exciting locations such as East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, or the headquarters of the Soviet intelligence service KGB. Along the way, you encounter iconic Black Ops characters like Woods, Mason, or Hudson, but new heroes are also part of the story.
So that you understand who Woods, Mason, and others are, we summarize the main points of the Black Ops story. Additionally, we recommend the video by MrDalekJD, which we have also used for this article:
Call of Duty: World at War
Even though World at War doesn’t have “Black Ops” in the title, this game serves as a kind of prelude to the series. It takes place in 1942 and features two different locations.
Part 1 – In the Pacific: In the Pacific, you experience the story of the American Marine Private Miller, who is rescued from a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Along with other soldiers, you first fight your way over Makin Island and later sink Japanese cargo ships.
Finally, you fight on the Japanese island of Okinawa and capture the Shuri fortress.
Part 2 – Europe: In this section, you fight as Soviet soldier Petrenko in Stalingrad. There, you receive orders from Viktor Reznov to kill the German General Heinrich Amsel.
During the Battle of Seelower Heights, you steer a T-34 tank. Eventually, you reach Berlin and storm the Reichstag building. While you hoist the Soviet flag on the building, you get shot. Reznov, who accompanied you on the missions, kills your murderer.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
In the beginning of the Black Ops series, you play the operator Alex Mason. He is strapped to an electric chair in 1968 and is being interrogated. He recalls various sections of his life.
Cuba: His story begins in Cuba in 1961 just before the Bay of Pigs invasion. Together with his comrade Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman, he breaks into Fidel Castro’s villa but only kills a lookalike.
Castro takes them captive. Mason is then handed over to Russian General Dragovich.
The reunion with Reznov: The next mission takes place in a Soviet labor camp. There, he meets Reznov, already known from World at War. Mason and Reznov have a common enemy in Dragovich. During an uprising, Mason manages to escape.
With Reznov, they go back to the year 1945. Dragovich, Reznov’s superior here, meets with a German defector who shows him the highly toxic gas Nova 6. Dragovich tries to eliminate Reznov in order to use the gas for himself. A British attack prevents this and Reznov manages to escape.
Vietnam: During the Vietnam War, Mason meets with a Russian defector – Reznov. He leads the group to Dragovich’s henchman Kravchenko and a ship carrying the gas Nova 6.
During the operation, Bowman and Woods die, as does Kravchenko.
Isle of Rebirth: Subsequently, two teams attempt to locate Steiner, the German defector. One team is the CIA agent Hudson and on the other side are Mason and Raznov.
Raznov reaches the location first and shoots Steiner before Hudson can intervene. However, later on, the player sees the situation from Hudson’s perspective, who then sees Mason shoot Steiner.
The interrogation: It turns out that Mason is being interrogated by Hudson and his colleague Weaver. Mason then clarifies the whole situation:
- Reznov has been dead for years, Mason has only imagined him
- Dragovich has programmed Mason to kill the President
- Reznov has also manipulated Mason to kill Steiner, Kravchenko, and Dragovich.
In the final part of the story, Mason and Hudson jointly attack Dragovich’s secret base, the cargo ship Rusalka off the coast of Cuba. Mason manages to kill Dragovich.
The credits depict the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Mason is also seen there. It remains unclear whether he killed the President.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
The second part takes place in 1986. Mason has settled in Alaska with his son. However, Hudson seeks him out for a new mission. Because Woods, who was supposed to have died in Black Ops, is reportedly still alive.
Woods: During Woods’ rescue, it turns out that he was captured by the terrorist Raul Menendez and his organization Cordis. During the rescue, Mason shoots the terrorist in the face, disfiguring him.
From this point on, the stories run in two timeframes. One describes events in 1986, while the other is set in the future in 2025, which has a Cold War between China and the USA at its center. The focus is on the rare earth metals.
The Past: Woods, Hudson, and Mason try to find out more about Menendez. They meet in Afghanistan, where Woods loses control upon seeing them again and throws a grenade. This kills Menendez’s sister Josefina, making the terrorist even angrier.
In another mission during the invasion of Panama, Woods accepts a mission to exchange a hostage for a prominent captive – Menendez. However, it is a trap. In reality, the captive is Mason. In a confrontation, Menendez mutilates Woods and kills Hudson. The boy David, Mason’s son, is also present.
The Future: David, now an adult, tries to find out more about Menendez in several missions. He has been informed about the past by Woods.
He manages to infiltrate a mole named Farid into the terrorists and capture Menendez. However, he is freed and manages to take control of the US drone fleet.
With this, he attempts to assassinate the US President. However, David is able to protect her and locate Menendez. In the final confrontation, there are several outcomes depending on the player’s choices.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
Black Ops 3 takes place in a dystopian future in 2065. Military technology has reached a point where robotics play a significant role in combat, and “super soldiers” have been developed to fight on the battlefield.
Here too, the role of a Black Ops soldier is assumed again. However, this part does not play an important role in the overarching story of the series.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Even though Black Ops 4 did not have a traditional single-player campaign, there were some cutscenes and information. Thus, you directly meet Savannah Mason-Meyer, the granddaughter of Alex Mason and the daughter of David Mason, in the first cutscene.
Another character is Jessica Mason-Green, her sister. She is obviously killed in a fight. But in reality, she survives.
Donnie “Ruin” Walsh, a follower of Savannah, is lured to her by Jessica through mysterious messages. She explains what really happened:
- Savannah tried to kill Jessica
- Ruin and his colleague Battery were manipulated and given an alternative story
- Savannah managed to resurrect old characters with her trillions of dollars, including Alex Mason, Woods, and also the terrorist Menendez.
This principle underlies the Battle Royale mode Blackout, in which various characters from different eras can be played.
Here is Black Ops: Cold War
The latest installment of the series is set during the time between Black Ops and Black Ops II. That is why you should also encounter old characters from these installments.
Additionally, developer Treyarch has promised that an old character, thought to be dead, will reappear. However, who exactly that is has not been disclosed.
