Every hero in For Honor has its strengths and weaknesses. If you want to become a feared warrior, it is essential to know and internalize these. You should not only keep your own character’s abilities in mind but also those of the other heroes. This way, you can avoid nasty surprises in battle.
Kensei – Information about the Samurai Assault Unit
The Kensei are masters of Samurai martial arts and have been trained from childhood to fight – and die – for their emperor. They wear heavy armor and fight with their Nodachi. These are longer versions of the Katana that can elegantly slash their opponents.
As a Shock Troop Unit, the Kensei is suitable for beginners, as he is a balanced fighter with good properties in both offense and defense. Compared to other heroes, he has a strong range, but some of his attacks are slow. While he performs light attacks quite quickly, heavy attacks take a lot of time.
The special thing about the Kensei is his combos, some of which end with an unblockable, powerful attack.
The Actions and Special Attacks of the Kensei in For Honor
Although the Kensei is a balanced fighter, this does not mean that he is a “mediocre” fighter. If you master the Samurai’s combos, you can defeat any opponent with him.
Note on the button combinations:
- R1 stands for Light Attack
- R2 for Heavy Attack
- Left Stick (L) for Movement (in the respective direction)
- Right Stick (R) for Weapon Position
- Square for Break Defense
- X for Dodge
- L3 for Sprinting
- Steel Sun Dusk: Three quick, light attacks.
- The next three attacks are chain attacks that end with a non-blockable heavy attack. If it hits, you will deal devastating damage. In “Spirit of the Inevitable”, it is important that the second attack hits – otherwise, the non-blockable attack will not be executed. Tip: Change sides during these chain attacks to make it difficult for the opponent to block.
- Skull Crusher: A quick overhead attack that allows you to quickly close the distance to the opponent and inflict light damage. Good for starting a fight.
- Quick Strike: This attack also relies on speed: Move a step around the opponent and strike quickly.
- Assault Grasp: With this attack, you take a step towards the opponent and perform a “Guard Break” – you penetrate their defense and leave the opponent momentarily defenseless. A good attack to start the fight and deal significant damage.

By the way: A disadvantage of the non-blockable attacks is that experienced opponents can recognize them early and dodge in time. However, the Kensei can cancel this attack. The Kensei can also cancel zone attacks with a button press.
The Gifts of the Kensei
The Kensei has a total of 12 different gifts, where you must choose between three gifts in four slots. You can customize the gifts in the hero menu under “Abilities”.
Slot 1:
- Quick Recovery: Passive ability – Stamina regenerates faster
- Corpse Collector: Passive ability – Health and stamina for killing warriors (adds)
- Long Breath: Passive ability – Sprints even when stamina is depleted
Slot 2:
- Encouragement: Allies deal more damage, warriors fight harder
- Smoke Bomb: Throw a smoke bomb that ends an enemy’s defense (blocking mode)
- Ice Cold Gaze: Attack and defense of nearby opponents are weakened
Slot 3:
- Second Wind: Regenerates a portion of health
- Longbow: Fires an arrow that deals medium damage
- Stand Fast: You are immune to throw attempts for a short time
Slot 4:
- Arrow Rain: Air attack that deals medium damage in multiple target areas
- Steadfast Banner: Regenerates the health of nearby allies
- Unblockable: Attacks cannot be blocked for a short time
More Tips:
- Do not always use the same attacks in succession. Otherwise, you will be predictable and an easy target.
- You have a good range with your weapon, which should keep the assassins’ heroes at bay. Try to dictate the distance to the opponent yourself.
- Try to corner your opponents so they have little room to dodge. Now use the Kensei’s non-blockable attacks.
