If you have played For Honor, you will have come across the term “Faction War.” This war is meant to reflect the eternal struggle between knights, vikings, and samurai and offers players the chance for fresh rewards and prizes. But what exactly is the war of the factions? What do I need to know about it?
What is the Faction War in For Honor?
The “Faction War” in For Honor is not a standalone game mode that you select and then play a few matches.
Instead, it represents the meta-game: every match you play in any mode contributes to the faction war and determines whether you will belong to the victorious faction or not.
At the beginning of the game, you need to choose one of the three factions: knights, vikings, samurai. All your future achievements will count for this faction. There are two things to consider:
- You can play with heroes from all factions; you are not restricted to this faction by your choice. For example, if you choose samurai as your faction at the beginning, you can still play with all playable characters in the game, such as the raider from the vikings. You still play for the samurai faction.
- You can change the faction you initially chose afterwards, but you will not receive rewards in that season. Therefore, it makes sense to change factions only after a faction war season. Simply switching to the leading faction does not earn you any rewards.
The war of the factions is monitored cross-platform (PS4, Xbox One, and PC) and on a global level. This means that every “For Honor” player sees the same map and contributes to the same war.
The territories in the Faction War
The territories of each faction are displayed on the Faction War map. At the beginning, all factions have 20 territories each:
- The knights are in the west and are colored yellow.
- The vikings are in the north and are colored red.
- The samurai are in the east and are colored green.
Over the course of the faction war, these borders change. For example, during the open beta, the knights were the victorious faction, and the map ultimately looked like this:

Info about the War Assets
You can shift the borders and conquer territories using War Assets.
War Assets are awarded after each multiplayer game. The amount of War Assets you receive depends on your personal performance. The better you perform in combat, the more resources you earn for your faction.
In other words: War Assets are points – the more you earn in a match, the better for your faction.
After each match, you can decide whether to allocate your War Assets to defend your own territories or to conquer enemy territories. Just select an area to do this. It must be located on a border.
By the way: If you do not allocate the resources yourself, they will automatically be distributed for the defense of your territories along the border.
How long does the Faction War last? Seasons and Rounds
In the full version of For Honor, the Faction War is divided into rounds and seasons:
- Each round lasts 2 weeks
- Each season lasts 10 weeks (which means 5 rounds)
- The map is updated every 6 hours.
At the end of a season, the tally is taken: the faction that holds the most territories wins.
The Faction War delivers rewards
If you are a member of the victorious faction, you will receive rewards at the end of the season. These include experience, steel, and exclusive prizes, such as emblems.
