ScudzTV, a YouTuber about FIFA 21, calculated on Twitter how expensive a dream team in Ultimate Team can be. He arrived at the conclusion that one must invest 100,000 euros or 900 days of pure gameplay time. EA, on the other hand, claims that everything can be achieved without real money.
This is the statement in question: In an interview with the Mirror, EA addressed some questions. They also talked about the imbalance in the e-sports scene of FIFA 21. The Mirror asked if EA was aware that professionals sometimes invest thousands of euros into the game to remain competitive.
EA responded that all items in the game “can be acquired without ever spending money, with purchases being “completely optional”. This statement inspired YouTuber ScudzTV to calculate for the EA developers that a dream team cannot be obtained without real money.
Icon team costs up to 100,000 euros
This is the team in question: The YouTuber shows his “dream team”. It consists only of icons, with none of the players having a rating less than 90. According to his statements, this team costs 100 million coins.
This is how the calculation was made: ScudzTV displayed the various ways to achieve 100 million coins for the team. He examined 3 different methods:
- Playing individual games – Per game, the YouTuber estimates 1500 coins. That would mean 66,666 games to earn 100 million coins. A game takes about 20 minutes, which translates to 916 days of pure gameplay – almost 3 years.
- Gaining coins through trading – Here, he estimates a profit of 10,000 coins per trade, meaning 10,000 trades would be needed for 100 million coins. The YouTuber estimates 10 minutes per trade – totaling 69 days of gameplay time that would need to be invested solely for trades.
- Investing real money – Here, the YouTuber estimates a profit of 100,000 coins per 12,000 FIFA Points. To reach 100 million coins, you would need to buy 1000 times the 12,000 points. In Great Britain, this amount of points costs £79.99, and in Germany even €99.99. Expanding this calculation, you would end up spending 100,000 euros in Germany.
Does this calculation seem realistic? Certainly. Of course, only the average was taken here, and it was about pure coin earning. If one were to invest 100,000 euros in FIFA, then it’s possible to pull a pack that might include one of the icons the YouTuber wants in his team.
But it’s especially interesting regarding the gameplay time that one would need to invest. EA claims that everything can be earned without real money, which is true. However, one would need to invest over 900 days of pure gameplay – in a game that becomes irrelevant in a year with a successor.
YouTuber Trymacs, for example, conducted an experiment at the release of FIFA 21. He invested over 10,000 euros into the game to prove that the drop rates for rare player cards are simply too low and that EA is ripping off its players.
The current discussion with ScudzTV reflects a similar picture. The YouTuber illustrates in his calculation how difficult and unlikely it is to get such a team.
Do you need such a strong team? That is certainly always a matter of interpretation. Even with the strongest team, you still require a lot of skill to be successful. Nevertheless, especially professionals show that a strong team is a key to success. Just look at the player line-ups of the professionals. They consist only of strong, but also expensive cards, which are often earned through good performance, but also through real money.
Recently, there was a major scandal regarding the icons in FIFA 21. It was revealed that these expensive cards were sold by EA employees:
