The map has so much water, but in relation, there are simply way too few fishing spots. Because you cannot just cast your fishing rod at any spot in the game – no – only at 27 predetermined locations.
The next disappointment did not take long to arrive: The exchangeable items require a ton of fish. Almost everyone who can’t equip Raiden Shogun with the “Grass Cutter Beam” is likely to reach for the free-to-play spear “The Fang”.
Due to the limitation of fish, this spear, in its full strength, will need a few weeks of farming time. Unless you have friends or enter other worlds to steal their fish.
I find it unfortunate that Genshin Impact has to make a grind out of everything and does not at least give the community, in a trivial matter like fishing, the freedom to have no restrictions.

The exchangeable fishing rods are useless
What is the problem with the fishing rods? You can exchange a rod once with an NPC in Mondstadt, Liyue, and Inazuma. These pretty, yet useless, rods are supposed to make fishing in the respective areas easier by reducing the time while fishing when you stay in the marked area in the fishing bar.
Each fishing rod requires 20 fish from four different species each. That’s 80 fish for about 15% faster fishing. They could have done better and made the mechanics harder so that fishing rods bring a greater, more effective effect, making the weeks of fishing worthwhile.
Every fish can be caught easily and relatively quickly with the standard rod.
Solution for the problems
What could be done to lift the restrictions? So that you can catch the seven fish at the fishing spots not only every few days, there should be an adjusted rarity degree per fish. This should prevent players from having to wait for fish to respawn, but instead be patient and, with the appropriate rod, receive the corresponding fish.
Although there is already some degree of rarity, it is not used sensibly. I find the solution for certain fish to appear at specific fishing spots well done. Let’s take the fishing spot in Ritou as an example. There you can fish the following fish:
- Glass Medaka
- lung fish
- Akai Maou
- puffer fish
- bitter puffer fish
According to the game, all fish have a rarity of three stars. Instead, the glass medaka could have a higher presence as a small fish and the Akai Maou as a red, conspicuous, and large fish could be rare. Basically a ranking from one to five stars to stay true to Genshin at this point.
But unfortunately, you encounter a fishing spot where almost all fish swim together. You cast the rod five to seven times, turn the clock forward, fish for the nocturnal rascals, and then have to wait two to three days.
Enough complaining – Here are the positive sides
What do I like about the new mechanic? The feature itself, along with its implementation, is well executed. You immediately understand how everything works and find your way quickly. Also, the variety and types of fish surprised me. The colors of the fish are sometimes beautiful, and I can hardly wait to catch some of them.
Furthermore, I love the “Spirit Cloud Basin”. You can also exchange the blueprint for it with an NPC in Liyue for fish and then produce it in infinite numbers. After that, you can place it in the Teapot of Transience, the housing of Genshin Impact, and put your caught ornamental fish inside.
This brings me to the next positive aspect: Ornamental fish! Each species of fish is also available as an ornamental fish. As a collector of Genshin, I was very pleased with this feature and can hardly wait to place EVERY fish species in one of these basins. I have already chosen my favorite species: the Dawn Catcher. I will do everything to place this fish, as a pair, in one of these basins!
Finally, I want to mention that despite everything I am very grateful for this mechanic. It is always expandable and adaptable. Furthermore, miHoYo keeps asking the community in surveys what could be improved. I hope that something might be done about it.

Here’s how to get the top spear “The Fang” in Genshin Impact – All steps in the guide
With Patch 2.1 in Genshin Impact, a feature that MeinMMO author Lena was really looking forward to was introduced. Unfortunately, in her opinion, it was implemented poorly.
Since Update 2.1 was released in the game, the new Fishing mechanic has become a top topic in Genshin Impact. It is actually a rather unspectacular feature, but it currently occupies the community and me greatly.
What did I expect from fishing? I love simulators like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. Because of that, I have a certain idea when it comes to fishing. You walk to a river or pond, cast your rod, and wait for a fish to bite.
Just like that. To either pass the time or just relax and take a break from the bad artifact rolls. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Genshin.
Too much mobile and too few fishing spots
What is the big problem? This feature has again oriented too much toward typical mobile games: “Did you catch seven fish? Good! Now please wait two to three days until you can catch seven fish again.”
On average, you can catch about 5 fish at each fishing spot per day before no new ones appear. After that, you can change the time of day to get about 2 nocturnal fish. Then you have to wait 48 to 72 hours before the fish respawn at that spot.
Thanks to the resin system, unfortunately, one has to wait for many things in Genshin Impact. Be it gathering equipment, materials, or money. This has the advantage that every player who does not have a lot of time can progress well – but there should be limits.
I had hoped that fishing would be a constant alternative without tight limits that a player could use at any time.
What else bothers me about the new feature? The number of fishing spots! When I started my game right after the update, I happily walked to the water after the quest. Only to find out that there were no fish anywhere. After about 15 minutes, I accidentally spotted the first fishing spot. The first disappointment.
But unfortunately, you encounter a fishing spot where almost all fish swim together. You cast the rod five to seven times, turn the clock forward, fish for the nocturnal rascals, and then have to wait two to three days.
