For Red 5, the studio behind the MMO shooter Firefall, it seems to be coming to an end soon. The Chinese company The9, however, wants to continue developing the game.
Rumors are spreading on social media and Reddit. Apparently, the unfortunate studio Red 5 has finally been abandoned. Some former employees say: Everyone I knew who still worked there has now been laid off.
This is a development that has been brewing for a while. Firefall never really ran smoothly. Then a launch in China was supposed to create a stir. But it turned out differently: Salaries were not paid, the launch in China fell flat, there were layoffs, restructuring, and now the lights are likely going out.
This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end for Firefall; the Chinese company The9, to which Red 5 belongs, seems willing to continue, has announced a mobile and PS4 version. But it seems we won’t hear much more from the original Red 5 team.
