The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online has been struggling with performance issues in the PvP area of Cyrodiil for some time now. In early 2020, a major project for improving performance was introduced. The results or significant changes, as well as communication, have been lacking. Now, Game Director Matt Firor finally addresses the issue after a long time.
Players have been waiting for this for a long time. Finally, there are official news from developer Matt Firor regarding the performance issues in ESO. For a long time, nothing was heard about the plans to improve performance and address issues in Cyrodiil. However, there is now a statement in the ESO forum.
What performance issues are there in PvP? Especially during “Prime Time” (~ 7 PM to 10 PM), playing in Cyrodiil is plagued by performance drops or frequent disconnects. It is not uncommon to get kicked from the game, land in the endless loading screen, or hammer on the keys waiting for a skill to fire off.
Especially when many players gather for a siege of a castle, some duels are decided solely because one player is able to use their skills and the other cannot. Some castles are oddly more affected than others. Outside of these times, these issues do not really occur at all.
It is understandable that many players are frustrated. Especially after a major performance improvement and PvP testing project was announced in January 2020 at the “ESO Tavern” in Cologne. Unfortunately, a long silence followed, which was not well received by the community.
ZOS shows understanding for player frustration
ESO Game Director Matt Firor writes that he understands the frustration of many players. Particularly given the lack of information about the PvP plans for ESO, which has been criticized in many ways.
We completely understand the frustration many of you are feeling, especially with lack of information about our PvP plans. This was a huge decision to make and we needed to make sure we had exhausted all other possibilities before announcing this. Thanks for bearing with us, and we will give you periodic updates about the re-architecture progress over the course of the year.

He justifies the silence by stating that all other options must have been exhausted before this announcement and talks about providing players with regular updates in the future.
No new PvP content until issues are resolved
Until the issues are resolved, there will be no new content for Cyrodiil and battlegrounds. This is to ensure that the current problem is not further exacerbated. Instead, efforts are being made to fix existing bugs and to keep players entertained, other options will be provided to keep the current content interesting.
As an example, “Special Rulesets” and weekend events are mentioned for Cyrodiil and battlegrounds. Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what the rulesets might look like.
Performance fix will take up most of 2022
Even though there has been little communication from ZOS (Zenimax Online Studios), it seems that work has indeed been ongoing on the performance project. Matt Firor explains that a series of tests have been conducted, which have been successfully completed. They now have the data they need and a plan for the future.
However, this plan may take some time, as it likely requires fundamental work on the code or possibly rewrites. For such a large and complex game, this will take some time. Moreover, the developers want to avoid rushing anything.
