The player numbers of the role-playing game Dark and Darker on Steam have recently decreased significantly. Now an update has made the dungeons more unpredictable – and players are celebrating it.
What kind of game is this? Dark and Darker is a free-to-play RPG on Steam set in a fantasy world. You create your own adventurer and venture into monster-infested dungeons alone or with up to two friends, aiming to collect as much loot as possible.
Within the dungeons, you encounter not only monsters but also other players – and they may be hostile towards you. The game’s principle is thus PvPvE. If you are defeated in a dungeon, your character loses everything they carry.

Randomly generated dungeons for more excitement
According to a blog post on Steam, the developers have integrated their first iteration of a random generator for dungeons into the game.
This season introduces several new systems while we return to our roots as a captivating multiplayer dungeon crawler. EA Seasons 4 & 5 introduced changes that made the dungeons too predictable and led to a stagnation of gameplay. Our goal this season is to bring back some of the unpredictability and mystery of the dungeons.
With the randomly generated dungeons, each trip should contain a certain level of unpredictability again. The new fog of war is also intended to ensure that you never quite know where your path will ultimately lead you.
How are the changes received by the players? Many players are excited about this innovation. Under the trailer for the new season on YouTube, they write:

Although the game is free-to-play and has received very positive reviews on Steam, the number of players has decreased in recent months. The day before the update, on December 18th, there were still around 5,000 players online at the same time (via steamdb.info). On December 19th, it was nearly 27,000.
