Director Yoshida has announced that his MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has now surpassed 16 million players. However, this number does not exclusively represent active players. How many people are currently playing the MMORPG?
These are the official numbers: There is currently calm before the storm in Square Enix’s MMORPG. In just under a month, the next major expansion Shadowbringers will be released, bringing tons of new content.
Accordingly, the game has surpassed the threshold of 16 million registered users. Compared to August 2018, the MMORPG has gained approximately another 2 million users, which sounds like a lot. However, this includes not only active accounts but also:
- Inactive accounts that no longer have active subscriptions
- Trial accounts that do not own the full version of FFXIV
- Bot accounts that will eventually be banned
How many active players does Final Fantasy XIV have? It is difficult to say how many active players Final Fantasy XIV actually has because Square Enix does not publish those numbers.
Unofficial census sites estimate the number of active players paying a subscription to be around 600,000. However, how reliable this estimate is cannot be determined. Therefore, it should be taken with caution.
What do the finances say? In the financial report to investors for the year 2019, Square Enix noted that revenues from the sales of FFXIV had declined. However, revenues from the ongoing subscriptions for the game remained stable during that period.
The decline in sales is not surprising, as the MMORPG did not release a new expansion in 2019. Therefore, it can be assumed that the numbers will rise again with the release of Shadowbringers on July 2, 2019.
