Players are continuously confronted with the Corona virus in the gaming community. In Final Fantasy XIV, a player died and received a large procession in-game.
What happened? It is common in the gaming community for players to pay their last respects in-game to their friends. For example:
- Hundreds of gamers gathered for a memorial service in ESO.
- In Tibia, players broke the server record during a memorial service.
Similar events occurred in Final Fantasy XIV. Over the Easter weekend, a long memorial service was held for a player who died from Corona.
Hundreds of players gathered on the Zalera server and began hours-long procession, starting in the city of Ul’dah. The players walked slowly at a walking pace through several areas, their destination being the Guardian Tree in the Deep Forest.
This is not just a beautiful in-game location with a particularly large tree that is several thousand years old. According to the story, it is also home to the most powerful elemental that protects the forest and its inhabitants.
How many were present? It is difficult to say how many players actually participated in the procession, but the number is likely several hundred.
Final Fantasy XIV has an internal limitation on how many player characters can be displayed on screen at the same time. Therefore, in the videos of the procession, players can be seen continuously appearing and disappearing as the limit for this restriction is exceeded.
Here is an example of this:
Many of them joined the procession without knowing the deceased. They simply wanted to pay their last respects. Some attendees were not even based on the Zalera server, but specifically created a character there for the procession.
Many of the participants wore black clothing, while others dyed their gear a soft pink. According to reports on reddit, it was the deceased player’s preferred color.
Actions like this continually prove that the gaming community is not solely toxic. For example, parents of a WoW player only realized after his death how happy he was in the game.
