The fantasy MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV still aims to be on the Xbox One. They are also interested in Nintendo’s planned console, Nintendo NX.
The fantasy MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is already available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. The special feature: Players can play together regardless of the platform they are on. This function is called “Crossplay.” For over a year, it has been known that Square Enix wants to bring Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox One, but Microsoft is struggling with the idea of crossplay.
With Windows 10, Microsoft has introduced crossplay between PC and Xbox One into the discussion and has now opened itself to this idea. However, it seems not far enough yet.
As FFXIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida mentioned in an interview, negotiations with Microsoft about an Xbox One port are still ongoing. However, Final Fantasy XIV also runs on Windows 7 and Windows 8, and there are still concerns about the crossplay between Xbox One and PlayStation consoles. Once Microsoft embraces the idea of crossplay, Square Enix is ready to bring the game to Xbox One.
Yoshida is also keeping an eye on Nintendo’s latest console, Nintendo NX. However, they want to wait to see when the console will be released, how widely it will ultimately be adopted, and how Nintendo feels about crossplay. Negotiations here have not yet begun.
Currently, on Xbox One, there are two MMORPGs with the Free-to-Play MMORPG Neverwinter and the Buy-to-Play MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online . Especially TESO is considered a major success on Microsoft’s console.
