Reaper is one of the two jobs introduced with the new Endwalker expansion of Final Fantasy XIV. In this quick guide, we provide an overview of the unlocking quest for the Reaper and further details about the job.
What can the Reaper do? As the new melee fighter among the FFXIV jobs, the role of the Reaper is to deal significant damage. The developers equip him with a scythe as his weapon and provide a non-sentient avatar for support.
In combat, you execute combos and abilities while attacking, allowing you to gather resources to switch into the powerful Lament form. This temporarily merges you with your avatar, enabling you to deal massive damage.

How do I unlock the Reaper job? Like all FFXIV jobs, the Reaper has a quest that allows you to unlock him. It starts in the city of Ul’dah:
- Quest Name: The Scythe
- Location: Ul’dah, Nald’s Crossroads (X: 12.8 / Y: 8.6)
- Quest Giver: Haggard-looking Servant
- Prerequisite: Ownership of the Endwalker expansion and at least one warrior or mage class at level 70
After unlocking, additional quests will follow at regular intervals, revealing more about the background and story of the job.
At what level does the Reaper start? The starting level of the Reaper is 70. Since it belongs to the advanced jobs, it does not have a starter class like Paladin (Gladiator) or Dragoon (Lancer). Equipping a scythe will also automatically equip the job crystal for you.
What armor does the Reaper need? As a melee fighter, the Reaper shares its gear with the Dragoon. This means you can wear all gear with the affix “of Maiming” or “of Slaying”. Your main attribute is Strength.
If you hurry, you can buy a “Maiming” set for level 70 with Allagan Stones of Poetry before the server maintenance (December 2, 10:00 AM). If not, there is likely to be a chest with suitable gear for your Reaper at the unlocking quest. While it has a lower item level than Poetry gear, it is still very practical.
Can I prepare for unlocking otherwise? If you want to start directly with the Reaper in the Endwalker expansion, you can log out at the appropriate spot in Ul’dah. The servers are expected to go online on December 3 at 10:00 AM, although the developers have already warned that there will be a large influx.
Therefore, keep in mind that the zone may be overloaded. Alternatively, you can log out in the guest room of Ul’dah.
