Today, April 13, Patch 5.5 of Final Fantasy XIV. Here are the key contents of the update and how to unlock them in a concise overview.
This is included in the patch: Patch 5.5, titled “Death Unto Dawn,” is the last major update before the next expansion Endwalker. As always, it brings a whole range of new content. This includes:
- Continuation of the main story
- Final section of the Nier raid
- Fight against Diamond Weapon in normal and EX
- The celebration for the reconstruction of Ishgard
- PS5 beta goes online

Is that all? No. Patch 5.5 will be split into several parts. The main part comes on April 13, with further parts to follow. By the end of May, the second part with the number 5.55 will be released, bringing the continuation of the story from Shadowbringers. It is meant to form the transition to the expansion Endwalker.
The quests around the Resistance weapons will also continue. Players will enter the new area “Zadnor Plain” and will be able to fight there. It is located at the border between Bozja and Dalmasca. This time, no minimum rank is required for the continuation of the quests at the Resistance.
Additionally, the “New Game+” mode will receive further content that you can play again.
After the server maintenance, it begins
These are the maintenance times: The server maintenance preceding the patch will start on April 13 at 3:00 AM and run until 12:00 PM noon German time. As always, the end of the maintenance might be delayed if there are unexpected difficulties. However, experience shows that maintenance in FFXIV often ends earlier than planned.

Continuation of the main story
How to unlock the quest:
- Name of the start quest: “Silver Armor”
- Quest NPC: Alisaie
- Location: Mor Dhona, Instance Sunstone (X: 6.0 / Y: 5.9)
- Requirements: One combat or magic job at level 80, completion of the quest “On Malevolent Wings.” This is the last story quest of the previous Patch 5.4
The new dungeon Paglth’an will be unlocked during the main story, so just follow the quest line.
This is what to expect in the story: The situation intensifies for the Warrior of Light and his friends. With the help of mysterious towers that have appeared all over the world, Zenos and Fandaniel are attempting to foretell the end of the world.
The land of Eorzea is burning, the allied city-states are under heavy siege by opposing hordes, and the situation seems hopeless. The Warrior of Light must rally all his allies to withstand the overwhelming force.
With Patch 5.5, only part of the main story quest will come. The second part, which will form a transition to the expansion Endwalker, will be available by the end of May after the Fan Festival (May 15 and 16). So expect a significant cliffhanger.
YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse – Conclusion
How to unlock the quest:
- Name of the start quest: “Sorrowful Plague”
- Quest NPC: Foreman
- Location: Kholusia (X: 34.7 / Y: 18.2)
- Requirements: One combat or magic job at level 80, completion of the quest “Sorrow in Orb Form.” This is a short side quest that appeared with Patch 5.4. Item Level: 495
There will also be weekly quests after completion, which conclude the story around the Nier raid. They are optional, however.
This is what to expect in the Nier raid: The final part of the “YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse” raid takes players into the tower Paradigm Breaker. Together with 2B and 9S, you will explore the raid and hopefully uncover the secret behind the androids.
The raid is expected to consist of 3 bosses and a series of segments with trash mobs that players will have to fight through. The bosses will be familiar enemies from the Nier universe.
You can look forward to new hairstyles modeled after those of 2B and 9S as rewards. Additionally, there will be new gear with an item level of 520 and coins that you can exchange for upgrade materials.
Quest series “Battle for Werlyt” and the fight against Diamond Weapon
How to unlock the quest:
- Name of the start quest: “Gleaming Life”
- Quest NPC: Magical Officer
- Location: The Fen (X: 11.3 / Y: 22.5)
- Requirements: One combat or magic job at level 80, completion of the quest “Monument of Atonement.” This is the last quest from Werlyt.
The fight against the Diamond Weapon will be unlocked during the quests.
How to unlock Diamond Weapon EX (Diamond Flash – Trauma):
- Quest NPC: Garlond Model Builder
- Location: The Fen (X: 11.5 / Y: 22.5)
- Requirements: One combat or magic job at level 80, completion of an unknown Werlyt quest from Patch 5.4. Presumably, you will have to defeat the normal version of the weapon for this. Item Level: at least 510
This is what to expect in Werlyt: After the victory over Smaragd Weapon, the VII Legion from Garlemald has one last trump card to play. Diamond is supposed to be the strongest weapon of its kind and will force the Warrior of Light to his knees.
The fight against the mechanical monster will take place high in the sky on a flying platform. There will again be a normal and an EX version of the trial fight, with the latter rewarding you with cool loot.

- a crafting item that you can use for a new Chocobo harness
- totems that you can exchange at NPC C’intana in Mor Dhona (X:22.7 Y:6.7) for weapons
New Super-Mount
With Patch 5.5, the new super mounts will also enter the game. You can unlock them after obtaining every Gwiber mount from the trial content of FFXIV: Shadowbringers.
- Name of the start quest: “Dragon of Fire and Iron”
- Quest NPC: Garlond Model Builder
- Location: The Fen (X: 11.5 / Y: 22.5)
- Requirements: Ownership of the mounts “Pixie Gwiber”, “Innocence Gwiber”, “Shadow Gwiber”, “Ruby Gwiber”, “Light Gwiber”, “Emerald Gwiber” or “Diamond Gwiber”.
Dream Trial: Leviathan
How to unlock the new dream trial: If you haven’t unlocked the mini-game yet, you can do it here:
- Name of the start quest: “Came to the Fox”
- Quest NPC: Traveler from Ishgard
- Location: Frohenhalde (X: 7.0 / Y: 5.9)
- Requirements: One combat or magic job at level 80
This is what to expect: The current dream trial with Titan will rotate out, and in its place comes Leviathan. The fight is about the old extreme version of Levi, which has been elevated from level 50 to level 80. And it is correspondingly challenging.
After the victory over Leviathan, you will engage in a small mini-game with the fox and earn the currency Dream Leaves. You will be able to exchange these leaves for rewards such as companions or mounts.
Wish Deliveries: Count Charlemend Durendaire
How to unlock the quests:
- Name of the start quest: “A Reliable Duo”
- Quest NPC: Francel
- Location: Sky City (X: 11.0 / Y: 14.4)
- Requirements: One crafting or gathering job at level 70, completion of the quests “A Livable City”, “New Momentum for the Scions” and “Happy Collector’s Gathering.” These are quests that are part of the reconstruction of Ishgard.
This is what to expect: Although the construction of Ishgard is complete, work continues. Various items are needed in large quantities, and you are to procure them. In Wish Deliveries, you will craft particularly high-quality items or gather them as a collector and present them to the delivery NPC. Overall, you will be able to accept 12 assignments from the esteemed Count each week.
As for rewards, you can look forward to hefty EXP bonuses for your gathering or crafting jobs or, if you are already level 80, crafter tokens. These tokens can be exchanged for further rewards and crafting materials.
Additional Notes
Here are a few things to watch out for in Patch 5.5:
- With Patch 5.5, a festival celebrating the reconstruction will kick off in Ishgard. About every 2 hours, FATE-like events will be held there, where you can win prizes
- The popular hairstyle “Gambler” returns. You will be able to exchange it at the Gold Saucer for MGP
- The day after the patch, on April 14, the slightly delayed Easter event will begin, in which you can receive an absolutely glamorous new outfit. It starts in Old Gridania (X: 10.2 / Y: 9.4)
- The beta for the PS5 version starts for all players and test accounts
- In the treasure dungeon Kyhe Ghiah, there will be new items from which you can create stylish glamour outfits
- New NPCs will be added who sell luxury goods such as new mounts: Edelina in Mor Dhona (X: 22.1 / Y: 4.8) and Tabeth in Eulmore (X: 10.0 / Y: 11.2)
