Although Sony’s next console is still nearly a year away, some developers are already hard at work on games for it. This includes the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV.
UPDATE: Square Enix made a statement and clarified the remark made by director Naoki Yoshida:
Yoshida-san expressed his hope that Final Fantasy XIV would one day appear on the next-generation Sony console – this was not meant as an announcement or confirmation!

What does Naoki Yoshida say? At an official fan gathering in London, FFXIV’s head, Naoki Yoshida, surprisingly made an appearance yesterday. He gave a brief speech during which he confirmed that work on a PS5 version of the MMORPG is underway.
Unfortunately, those were all the details he could share with the fans.
Work on Final Fantasy XIV for the PlayStation 5 is in full swing, but it is not known whether the developers will be ready in time for the PS5 launch and if FFXIV will be one of the first titles for the console.
Whether players can expect significant graphical improvements after the release of the PS5 version was also something that FFXIV’s head did not say.
What will happen to Final Fantasy XIV for PS4?
How has the console transition gone in the past? This is not the first time that Final Fantasy XIV will run on consoles across two different generations. The reboot of the MMORPG, “A Realm Reborn”, was originally released for both the PS3 and the PS4.
The PS3 support went offline in June 2017, about 11 years after the console was released. Since the PS4 is currently only 6 years old, it can be assumed that FFXIV support will still be running for a while.
Players were also given the option to conduct a free upgrade to PS4 several months prior to the shutdown of the PS3 version.
For which consoles will FFXIV also be released? During the X019 conference, Xbox chief Phil Spencer also confirmed that FFXIV will finally be coming to his console.
The negotiations between Microsoft and FFXIV director Yoshida have been ongoing for several years and there seems to be a breakthrough that will bring the Final Fantasy MMORPG to Xbox fans.
However, Spencer did not provide an estimated release date or timeframe for when fans can expect FFXIV on Xbox.
