The last field expedition started in Final Fantasy XIV in 2020 with patch 5.35. Now there is finally fresh supply: Kreszentia starts today and players have tips for maximum fun.
What kind of content is this? The Occult Crescent South Expedition is a new field expedition. It features large additional areas in Final Fantasy XIV that operate according to their own rules. Depending on the iteration, between 72 and 144 players per instance explore a large environment with monsters, FATEs, big battles, and even 48-player dungeons.
The Occult Crescent specifically allows players to explore an area inspired by the Bermuda Triangle, filled with elements from Final Fantasy V. Notably, there are new Phantom Jobs that alter the way your class is played. Knowledge levels are also gathered that affect damage output and personal defense.

This is how the Occult Crescent is going to be the most fun
What tips do players have? In the official forum, Final Fantasy XIV players exchange tips so they can have fun with the new field operation right from the start. Post opener Musashidon suggests, for example, that he recommends casual gamers to play the Occult Crescent with a tank or a red mage.
Tanks have high defense and can purposely draw monsters to themselves, making them easier to combat. Red mages, on the other hand, combine high damage with good self-healing abilities as a class. The latter becomes important starting from knowledge level 6, as you can lose levels when you die and are not rescued by another player. With the red mage, you can delay dying for as long as possible.
Poster VeyaAkemi writes that all classes without a resurrection spell should definitely have Phoenix Down in their inventory. These can be used to resurrect other players, which is important, as mentioned. The item can be purchased at the market board or from NPCs.
Several forum members write that players should definitely pay attention to how they attract monster attention. Too many or too powerful enemies can quickly ruin the fun of a field expedition, by getting a player killed too quickly.
Elemental sprites, for example, react immediately when you get too close. Other monsters become aggressive only when they see you. Additionally, monsters attack faster when a player with a significantly lower level walks past them.
Most posters agree, however, that field expeditions are always cooperative content. The most fun and leveling success is achieved when you join a larger group of players and also form short-term groups to help each other.
With these large groups roaming through the instance, you have a good chance of not being confronted alone by a nasty monster. Additionally, FATEs and Co. fall faster the more players participate. This can mean that special events like the 48-player dungeons are unlocked faster.
When does the Occult Crescent go live? The Occult Crescent is now live. Specifically, a battle job at level 100 is required, and the Dawntrail main quest must be completed.

The current expansion Dawntrail has not yet convinced players with its story, but with the MSQ of patch 7.2, the frustration seems to be resolved.
