The upcoming graphics update for Final Fantasy 14 is supposed to bring high-resolution textures, better lighting, and more. Both the player characters and the NPCs will receive a visual upgrade. However, many players agree that the Lalafell have not been particularly well served.
What’s wrong with the teeth? The Lalafell are a small, adorable race. They are the size of children, which might lead to them being underestimated in battles. But not only their height, their teeth also appear child-like.
In the reddit forum, many players are upset that the mouth area currently looks like an “all-encompassing void.” It’s creepy that the mouth consists of a large black hole, with tiny teeth found at the top.
But after the graphics update, it won’t get better:
The black hole of the mouth area will be filled with teeth after the graphics update. However, the teeth are now so much in focus that they look unnatural. With the mouth open, players can even see the back molars, as the angle of the row of teeth is smaller than before.
They don’t think that the new appearance is an improvement over the previous mouth area. Actually, the graphics update is supposed to be an upgrade in visuals. The community on reddit is venting their displeasure.

What do players say about the new teeth? The new teeth are not well received by players. reddit user Afeastfordances writes, for example, that the visible teeth create a large gap to the cheek. To him, it looks like a hamster.
Others compare them to beavers or think that the gap looks as if the Lalafell have invisible cotton balls between their teeth and cheeks during a dental examination.
For the thread starter, the new teeth look like those of a dolphin. After a quick search, we can confirm: Dolphins actually have teeth with such a steep angle, and we see certain similarities.
It remains to be seen whether Square Enix will heed the players’ feedback and make further changes to the teeth. Until then, players will have to live with the hamster-beaver-dolphin.
When will the graphics update be released? The new teeth will only be available with the new Dawntrail expansion on July 2, 2024. The images from the reddit forum come from the benchmark tool, which allows players to test in advance how well the new graphics update will run on their PC.
