The movie about Monster Hunter has received a new trailer. And this time the focus is where it should be: on monsters, hunters, and the Palico head chef! Finally, it’s a trailer that MeinMMO author Larissa Then likes.
When a film about Monster Hunter was announced in 2018, I was initially very hyped. I had just started with Monster Hunter World and loved the game. Today, 1000 hours of gameplay later, I still look forward to the film.
I have been a big Monster Hunter fan for years, even before Monster Hunter World. However, I was quite disappointed by the first teaser for the film. Usually, I like to let movies come to me and do not judge them hastily based on trailers. However, my excitement here was truly dampened. And it wasn’t just me, but many others in the community felt the same way.
The first trailer felt more like a dull movie about Call of Duty with lots of military PR. Some soldiers are shooting some guns at the monsters. And one of them is even too dumb to close the right eye while shooting, whatever the reason for that may be.
For that trailer, I thought something along the lines of Milla Jovovich, what the hell? But as flat as the first trailer was, the newest one is certainly appealing and has sparked my excitement for the film again. This is the official Chinese trailer for the film.
A focus on hunters and monsters
The latest trailer gives me hope, and in many ways. The action, the monsters, the characters, everything just feels like Monster Hunter and no longer like a clumsy action shootout.
These monsters can be seen: In the first trailers, and in a video with the developers of Monster Hunter World, we have already seen the first monsters. These included Diablos and Rathalos as well as the small Apceros.
The new trailer offers an even deeper insight. There, spider-like Nerscylla scurry around, seemingly fulfilling another purpose.
Furthermore, we briefly see a Gore Magala, at least as far as I recognized it. This means that two monsters appear in the film that were not in Monster Hunter World, which I would like to see more of.
This is what the main characters are doing: I just mentioned a deeper purpose of the Nerscylla: I now finally know how to pronounce it! But in addition, Tony Jaa and Milla Jovovich seem to want to put the Diablos to sleep with their poison.
However, a certain language barrier separates the two main characters, which I find quite understandable and likable. The hunter has to explain to his soldier colleague with gestures what he actually wants from her.
This already brings a smile to my face in the trailer and is not the only moment. Even when Milla doesn’t want to play the bait a second time, I had to grin. But the funniest was the hunter’s facial expression when Milla says “Let’s do this” to him:
Overall, the role with Tony Jaa seems well-cast and well-written. He knows what he has to do, and that in fine old Monster Hunter manner. Going after monsters with huge weapons and all kinds of tricks.
I’m in love with a Palico
What I like most about the trailer, however, is the meowscular chef. I was already a big fan of the former warrior who now dedicates his life to cooking in Monster Hunter World.
In the trailer for the film, he is really well portrayed, even the cooking sequence, as known from Monster Hunter World, is featured. However, when he throws the kiss at the camera at the end, I was completely in love.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson had already hinted in an earlier interview that the meowscular chef will find his way into the film. He is supposed to have a special relationship with the protagonist and flirt with her.
So the last few seconds are my favorite in the new trailer for the Monster Hunter movie. The kiss from the Palico was definitely meant for me!
Additionally, another small hope creeps in. Even though the film itself has nothing to do with the developers of Monster Hunter, I have not yet given up hope for a weapon switch.
In the film, Tony Jaa alternates between a bow and a great sword. Something like a weapon switch likely won’t happen, but one can dream.
Now I am curious about what we can really expect from the film and what monsters will join the ranks. Maybe there is even a few Iceborne monsters waiting for us.
