The Monster Hunter movie has its first full-length trailer. It features some big monsters – and an impressive display of effects. What are the reactions like?
What does the trailer show? After the film had already received a first short teaser, the first Monster Hunter trailer has now been released.
It showcases more of the team around “Captain Artemis”, played by Milla Jovovich. And the Diablos from the teaser also makes an appearance again. But this time we also get a brief glimpse into the story.
Let’s summarize briefly: The trailer begins with a distress call from the “Bravo Team”, which has apparently gone missing and needs assistance. “That looks like a tear in the sky,” is heard from the walkie-talkie, followed by monster sounds and a scream – that’s it. Milla Jovovich and her team of soldiers set out to find the team – and only find ominous markings in the desert.
Suddenly, a dark storm approaches, lightning strikes the markings, and the soldier group gets pulled into a parallel world. Here they encounter the Diablos, which is commented on with a “Oh shit”. Overall, the trailer features many lines that sound like “typical action movie”:
- “Are we the Guardians of the Galaxy now?”
- “This shit officially exceeds my pay grade.”
- “I don’t care what these creatures are. We’ll destroy them and close the gate.”
- And the film’s big tagline is: “The bigger – the nastier.”
After that follows a big display of effects, plenty of monsters, and a few explosions. Rathalos also makes an appearance in the trailer. By the way, a Palico cook is also supposed to appear in the film.
When does the film premiere? The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 3rd. The first teaser received a lot of criticism – how does the new trailer fare?
“Generic action movie with Monster Hunter logo on it”
This is the fan response: The German version of the trailer on KinoCheck (via YouTube) currently stands at 1,106 thumbs up, while 228 are down. The English version (via IGN) has 12,134 likes and 4,673 thumbs down (as of: October 14, 6:50 PM).
For both versions, it’s primarily the comments that view the trailer critically:
- “Someone clearly didn’t understand Monster Hunter. ‘The bigger, the nastier’ – what nonsense,” comments a user (via YouTube).
- “‘The bigger, the nastier’ – what kind of trash is this?” comments another user, who criticizes the portrayal of the monsters: “The games show that they are actually just animals, and among them, there are indeed predators. I think this goes completely in the wrong direction” (via YouTube).
- “This military nonsense feels totally out of place” (via YouTube).
- “2020: Let’s put all the money into visuals and ignore stories and plots” (via YouTube).
- “It looks like they took a generic action movie and slapped the Monster Hunter logo on it” (via YouTube).
While there is still praise for the appearance of the monsters, a large part of the comments criticizes that the film feels very far from the classic Monster Hunter. The setting of “military squad against monsters” does not seem to be what many had imagined.
How did you receive the first trailer for the film? And which monsters – for example from Iceborne – would you like to see in it?
