For FIFA 23, new gameplay elements were introduced. Besides Hypermotion and running animations, one thing stands out in particular: the new “Super Shot.”
This was introduced: On July 27, 2022, EA Sports presented various things that should change your gameplay for the release of FIFA 23. In the new gameplay trailer, “HyperMotion 2” played a major role – the revamped technology from FIFA 22, which is supposed to bring over 6,000 realistic animations to FIFA 23.
However, while you already know HyperMotion from the next-gen versions of FIFA 22, FIFA 23 includes a completely new feature. And this could have quite a significant impact on your matches in FIFA 23.
Stay on target with the Power Shot – and score
This is the new feature: The “Power Shot” was described by the developers at a press presentation for FIFA 23 as a “skill-based shooting mechanic.” Here’s how it works:
- You position yourself in a promising shooting position and aim precisely
- You hold down the shoulder buttons of your controller (i.e., L1 and R1 or LB and RB)
- Then you press Circle / B
Now a longer shooting animation begins, during which the camera even moves a bit closer to your player. Your player winds up and takes a powerful shot.

In the best case, this results in a very powerful shot that crashes into the corner of the opponent’s goal, passing all defenders. If you do everything just right, the keeper stands very little chance of reaching the ball.
In the worst case, however, your opponent may exploit the long animation of your shot to steal the ball from you or at least take down your attacker. Additionally, you truly need to aim accurately – otherwise, you’ll send the ball into the stands instead of the net.
How powerful is this? Definitely, the Power Shot feels like a mechanic to learn. It somewhat resembles the perfect timed finishing shots from previous installments that were nearly impossible to save – just with more power.
The Power Shot operates like a “High risk, high reward” calculation – it can be easily blocked if one reacts quickly but is hard to save when perfectly executed.

What else changes in gameplay?
HyperMotion: In general, the deep dive into FIFA 23 gameplay revealed numerous new insights. This included, among other things, HyperMotion 2: With motion data from two complete real football matches, numerous animations were collected to make the game more realistic.
This is quite detailed: There are even situations where players continue passes with their back instead of awkwardly twisting. Direct contact between players, such as during aerial duels, is also supposed to look more realistic.
Particularly regarding dribbling, HyperMotion 2 should make a noticeable impact. Quick direction changes and movements should be realistically employed, providing you with more options to vary your play.
Sprints: The pace will also be adjusted again. Now there are different speed types that your players will be categorized into.
- For example, there are explosive attackers who are very fast in the first few meters but then taper off.
- On the other hand, there are players who need a bit of a run-up but then can outpace their opponent.
This is intended to better balance the longstanding speed issue in FIFA 23. Additionally, players like Kylian Mbappé will have their own unique running styles, making them more similar to their real-life counterparts.
Free Kicks: Changes are also being made to set pieces, as the first trailer for FIFA 23 briefly showed. In the new installment, you use the left stick to determine the direction in which you want to shoot, and with the right stick, you choose a point where your players should hit the ball. This results in different types of shots you can use to surprise your opponents.
On the other hand, players can now even lie behind the wall to block low shots. Also surprising!
In general, the shooting mechanics in FIFA 23 will be adjusted – numerous animations have been added to provide you with various shooting options. This aims to make the matches significantly different from one another.
Additionally, there are plenty of detail improvements. New skill moves are also included. One was already visible in the previous trailer and could be extremely powerful.
