In FIFA 23 a hidden commentator has appeared: fans are sharing videos from the game where Ryan Reynolds can be heard at the microphone. The right club is crucial in this case.
FIFA 23 is now just over 3 months old, but only now has a little Easter egg appeared on the players’ radar: actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney can contribute commentary in the game when playing with AFC Wrexham.
Currently, clips are being shared on YouTube in which Reynolds and McElhenney can be heard when Wrexham is on the pitch – for instance against Liverpool FC, about which direct remarks are made:
The two refer to the match as a special match, a big club challenging a very small club. “A giant club against a tiny, makeshift version of a football club,” comments Reynolds, to which McElhenney replies: “Of course we mean Liverpool.”
“Small club, small town,” continues, mentioning a “tight community in Liverpool” that would hold the community-led club together – against the “massive” AFC Wrexham. The whole thing is obviously intended as a joke.
Afterward, the actual commentators thank “Ryan and Rob” and take over again.
A similar message can also be found when Wrexham plays against Stockport County. There, the two joke that it’s still “bitter” that Stockport got promoted instead of Wrexham and that they should now be humiliated.
Whether there are more such Easter eggs is still unknown. The comment can only be found with the English commentators.
What’s the deal with Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenny, and AFC Wrexham?
The Welsh club AFC Wrexham is known as the “third oldest club in football history” but plays a minor role as a fifth division team. However, in 2020, the club suddenly made headlines – because Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club.
Since then, the two have acted as “co-owners” of the club, continually bringing it into the public eye. There is also a documentary about the club and the purchase by Reynolds and McElhenney, along with humorous videos about the club.
The two had already made headlines in 2021 when the club was included in FIFA 22 – in the “rest of the world,” which clearly irritated them:
For Reynolds, it is not his first gaming appearance: His character from the movie “Free Guy” appeared in Fortnite, including a small event. The film itself also revolved completely around the world of video games and was well received.
Hollywood in FIFA 23: In fact, Ryan Reynolds is not the first actor to appear in FIFA 23. His colleague Jason Sudeikis is also found in the game in the form of his role “Ted Lasso”. This is the main character of the eponymous series, in which a completely overwhelmed football coach is supposed to take over a professional football team in England.
Not only Ted Lasso, but also the complete fictional club “AFC Richmond” is represented in FIFA 23 – including its players.
