In FIFA 23 Ultimate Team there will be the biggest changes since the start of the FUT mode, but many fans are already worried about important cards.
What is changing in FUT 23? Yesterday, on August 11, 2022, EA announced a major change for the FUT mode of the upcoming FIFA 23. The old chemistry system will be completely discarded and replaced with a new, more flexible system.
In short, it works like this:
- No more connections between players standing next to each other on the pitch.
- Players gain chemistry through identical leagues, nationality, or club – position does not matter.
- There are 3 chemistry levels per card and no more negative effects.

Fans see major issues for Icon cards
In the reddit thread by Queen_LaFIFA (via reddit), fans are extensively discussing the new chemistry system. The big question: What will happen to the Icon cards in FUT 23?
Because in FIFA 23 Ultimate, they function differently than before. While they still have unique chemistry properties, they no longer provide as many benefits to the team as in previous editions, where they supplied chemistry to every adjacent player.
In FUT 23, they boost the chemistry of players with the same nationality and count as two players themselves, allowing countrymen to receive 2 chemistry points.
Why some Icon cards could be useless: It is argued that legends from less popular football nations, such as Puskas (Hungary), Eto’o (Cameroon), Best (Northern Ireland), Litmanen (Finland), Hagi (Romania), and Giggs (Wales), might not play a significant role in the FUT mode of FIFA 23.
While they still play at full chemistry, they no longer provide a chemistry boost to their teammates unless they share the same nationality. And that is not so simple with the above-mentioned players.
It is therefore quite possible that a whole bunch of Icon cards will become significantly less attractive because they simply cannot generate extra chemistry for certain teams.
Why many Icon cards could become unaffordable: In addition, fans suspect that icons from popular nations like Brazil or France could become extremely expensive or even unaffordable. Because they would work particularly well in the new chemistry system, as they can boost the many top cards from these nations.
