The career mode of FIFA 23 has been introduced. However, many fans felt that the new features left a lot to be desired.
The career mode is a classic part of the FIFA series, which for years has represented perhaps the most important offline mode of the game. This will also be the case at the FIFA 23 release.
In career mode, you take over a club of your choice or simply create a brand new club yourself. There, you lead the behind-the-scenes operations, from player transfers to line-ups to the development of talents and winning titles.
Furthermore, you have an overview of the finances, contract statuses, and training in your club.
On August 1, 2022, the new features for the career mode in FIFA 23 were presented. But in the community, there are some players who had hoped for more than what was presented.
FIFA 23: Career mode innovations disappoint some players
What’s new? The most notable change in the manager career of FIFA 23 is that you can now use real managers – like Jürgen Klopp, Antonio Conte, Guardiola, and others. All authentic managers who are in the game should also be available.
You are not bound to their real club, so you can let Guardiola coach VfB Oldenburg, for example, if you wish.
In addition, you can change the outfits of the managers. So if you want to put Jürgen Klopp in a new shirt, or think that Thomas Tuchel should wear more sunglasses, that’s also possible.
However, the managers do not seem to come with special skills or anything similar.
Besides the managers, there are some new features, such as playable highlights, a new menu, or the “Transfer Analyst” that evaluates your deals.
You can find a closer look at the new features here in the video:
However, these innovations apparently could not convince all fans. If you look at the FIFA subreddit or the comments on the career mode trailer on YouTube, you will primarily find voices wishing for other or more features.
There is criticism that many of the innovations are rather cosmetic in nature – such as the new cutscenes or ultimately the possibility to use real manager avatars.
In terms of gameplay, there is something changing in the player career, where there are now different personality types. In the manager career, however, much remains the same.
- “I can’t help but see these changes as ultimately insignificant. And that on the condition that they manage to get everything right by release,” says user “philfycasual” (via reddit).
- “My God, I just want a really deep and entertaining career mode in FIFA once. I don’t need a complete FM, but it’s ridiculous how dull this mode is now. Yes, it’s fun just jumping to the highlights, especially in the player career mode, and yes, having the best managers (at least those from the PL or big clubs) is nice, but it’s nothing special,” says user FelixSmith1894 (via reddit).
- “There are so many things the community has requested over the years that they could implement, but never do. Career statistics, an expanded youth academy, a better transfer system. All of that would be very exciting for career mode players and instead we get a new menu,” criticizes user scamden (via reddit).
- “An expanded youth academy that actually plays games, or the ability to manage a B team and send young players there (like Barcelona B, Bayern Munich II, etc.) would be absolutely great,” adds user zrizzoz (via reddit).
- “I just want to see a player’s stats during their time with my club, not just the season stats. I’ve had players at clubs for over 6 years, I want to see their total goals, assists, etc. before I sell them,” suggests user JayCleaton (via reddit).
On YouTube, users also comment that the changes are nice but nothing groundbreaking. One user describes that the changes seem more like “patches than innovations” (via YouTube).
In the comments, further suggestions come up that would promote realism in career mode. Such as recurring injuries if players are poorly trained, tougher contract negotiations – no matter what you offer, financial fair play, or angry fans who leave the stadium shortly before the finish if you play poorly.
Instead, we now have the new menu or similar features. Many fans apparently wish for more drastic, meaningful innovations in career mode – so that it feels more like real football.
What do you think of the new features? Have they met your expectations? Or would you also wish for something else? What features should the career mode have for you? Let us know in the comments.
Among the new features for FIFA 23, new skill moves are also expected. One has already been spotted by fans in the trailer – and the skill move looks really strong.
