EA Sports announces that with the help of FIFA 23, it already knows which nation will win the upcoming football world championship. But there is a small problem with the calculation.
The World Cup is just around the corner and EA Sports is diligently releasing relevant content for FIFA 23. For example, the free World Cup mode has been released as an update for FIFA 23.
But now EA Sports wants to know already which nation will grab the coveted World Cup trophy. And they are quite sure, as during the World Cups of 2010, 2014, and 2018, the development studio actually predicted the correct world champions every time.
But can EA do it a fourth time?
EA predicts world champions, but the calculation has errors
What does EA predict? In a blog post (via EA), EA Sports published an overview showing which nation is supposed to win the upcoming World Cup. The developers completely simulated the tournament using FIFA 23 and determined the supposed winner.
According to EA Sports, the Argentinians are supposed to win the World Cup trophy this year. They are expected to face Brazil in the final and win this match by a margin of one goal. The third place will go to the world champion of 2018, France.
Fans find a problem: But there is a problem with the simulation. Clever fans on Twitter have discovered that in the tournament tree published by EA, simulated matches have occurred that should not have taken place.
For example, Brazil and Switzerland are found on the same side, even though they are in the same group. Thus, they would theoretically not meet again until the final. However, EA’s tournament tree shows it differently.
What does EA say about the problem? EA has already recognized the error, which apparently also exists in the World Cup mode of FIFA 23, and is currently working on a solution (via EA).
Is the prediction realistic? Despite the error, a world champion title for Argentina does not seem unlikely. They recently won the Copa América and are definitely one of the favorites in the tournament.
If the calculation is correct, it would be the third title for the South Americans after 1978 and 1986 and the greatest triumph for Lionel Messi in the national team.
