In FIFA 22 there is a new mode that officially adopts the player-established “Golden Goal” system: The game ends immediately after a goal.
What is Golden Goal? In FIFA 22, there are numerous weekly objectives where you can earn rewards – for example, the “Icon Swaps”. Usually, this requires fulfilling specific tasks in “Friendly Match Mode”: scoring goals, getting assists, winning matches, completing games, and similar objectives.
However, since this is time-consuming and many players do not want to play full matches for these objectives, the “Golden Goal” mechanic was already established in the community during FIFA 21.
This continued in FIFA 22: Many players end the game after the first goal – the one who scores the first goal wins. This is not an official rule but is practiced by many players.
This idea has the advantage that you can reach rewards faster. On the other hand, some players did not like this system and preferred to play full matches – just for the enjoyment of the game. If an opponent constantly stopped the game, expecting to be gifted the victory after a goal, it could be annoying.
There is now a new mode in the Friendly Match section. And it leaves no doubt as to who wins after the first goal.
This is how the official “Golden Goal” mode works
What’s new: In FIFA 22, there is now a new variant of friendly matches that operates under the motto “Goal Target”. Here, the game does not primarily end after 90 minutes, but after reaching a specific number of goals. The game proceeds beyond 90 minutes and extra time only if no player has scored the required number of goals by then.
If you check Ultimate Team now, you will find the “First Goal Cup”. This runs until June 9, 2022, and the rules are clear: Whoever scores the first goal wins the game immediately.
However, there are some restrictions: For one, you may only participate in this cup 5 times a day. Additionally, only players from Ligue 1 with a maximum of one loan player are allowed – this aligns with the current TOTS event, where the French top league is in focus.
Is there something to win? Yes, there are some objectives for the “First Goal Cup”. For each win, you can earn 50 XP and various pack rewards. If you complete the entire task sequence, you will receive a Rare Player Pack – which belongs to the best packs in FIFA 22.

What you should pay attention to: Since it only takes one goal to win, there can be an unfair advantage: Namely for the team that has kickoff. Therefore, be especially vigilant when your opponent should have the kick-off in the match – it is not uncommon for the first goal to occur immediately after the kick-off.
Moreover, many players will play extremely offensively to quickly achieve the first goal. This is a good tactic but also opens up opportunities for counterattacks.
Secure ball possession can also pay off. Because you can’t concede a goal if the opponent simply doesn’t get the ball.
