Which card is it? The Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo from Manchester City has been chosen as this year’s left back of the Team of the Year.
Since TOTY cards are generally extremely strong cards, it is no surprise that Cancelo has very high stats. This is also reflected in his price: One must currently shell out about 850,000 coins to get the card on the transfer market (via futbin).
Nevertheless, some players have either packed the Portuguese or invested the necessary coins to secure him. And they have noticed that this card is much more than just a damned strong full-back.

What makes the Cancelo card special: The TOTY card of Cancelo essentially has no weaknesses. The lowest stat is the shooting stat with 85, which is mainly brought down by the finishing detail.
Otherwise, Cancelo has basically everything that even the strongest icon cards make look outdated. He even boasts a “weak” foot with 5 stars and skill moves with 4 stars, despite being a defensive player.
Players in the FIFA subreddit have also noticed this, having freed Cancelo from his defensive roots to use him in almost any other position. Apparently with success.
Several threads are discussing the card. “TOTY Cancelo is absolutely ridiculous,” says a post by user “joaofelix9”, who describes his experience with the card: “Play him wherever you want, CDM, CAM, ST, on the wing, it doesn’t matter. This guy is damn ridiculous, he intercepts everything like a magnet and moves like Messi with the ball while he glides over the pitch and even has a solid shot. Completely crazy,” said the user (via reddit).
Another user describes how Cancelo helped him to an extremely successful Weekend League as a striker (via reddit).
Also, “Canadian Carlos” has pushed the Portuguese forward to find out: “He is unbelievable in front of goal. I wasn’t even aware that he had 5-star weak foot, but with a finisher, he overshadowed TOTGS Ronaldo and WW Martial” (via reddit).
Moreover, having such a defensively strong player in attack is very helpful. He can immediately regain possession when the ball is lost.
Cancelo indeed seems to be able to do everything. Or, as user Watermelonite writes: “Personally, I prefer him as LB, RB, CAM, CM, CDM, CAM, LM, RM, or ST” (via reddit).
Only as a goalkeeper does it seem that nobody has used him yet.
How to get the card? Unfortunately, it’s not easy. Cancelo is the third cheapest card in the TOTY – only Hakimi for about 700,000 and goalkeeper Donnarumma for 224,000 come behind him – but he is still hard to obtain. Getting over 800,000 coins requires a lot of work in Rivals and Weekend League.
The main problem is that the chance of getting TOTY cards in packs is negligibly small. One should not hope to pack the coveted cards – it takes an insane amount of luck to do so.
Furthermore, the TOTY event ends this week, removing the cards from packs. However, they will be replaced by the Future Stars, which are also likely to be very strong. Who knows – maybe there will be a card that can do basically everything again.
