Best Formations and Tactics in Ultimate Team
What are these formations? We show you 4 formations from FIFA professionals, each pursuing different playing approaches and providing a foundation for your teams.
4-2-2-2 – Balanced formation that is strong offensively and defensively
This is what makes the formation special: After the first title update, the gameplay has changed somewhat and many players have been swearing by the 4-2-2-2 formation since then. Like Werder professional fifabio97 (via YouTube), who showcases the formation on his channel.
Particularly interesting is the setup because it offers a lot both offensively and defensively and has no major weaknesses. With this formation, you have a stable defense with 4 defenders and 2 defensive midfielders while still having enough attacking power with 4 players in attack.
Use this tactic and instructions: fifabio97 relies on these settings:
- Defensive
- Balanced
- 60 Width
- 50 Depth
- Offensive
- Balanced
- Balanced
- 60 Width
- Players in Box: 7
- Corners: 1
- Free Kick 2
Also change the following instructions (all others remain on “Standard”)
- RB and LB: Stay back while attacking
- Defensive CDM: Stay back while attacking, cover center
- Attacking CDM: Cover center
- Both CAM: Reinforce defense
4-3-2-1 – Defensively strong, but dangerous
This is what makes the formation special: The 4-3-2-1 is the favored formation for many YouTubers. One of these players is “The FIFA Analyst” (via YouTube), who presents a compact yet offensively dangerous variant of this formation.
In his version, the team stands compactly at the back and orders the full-backs inwards if necessary. This creates a strong block with outside and center midfielders that is difficult to overcome.
At the front, the RCM, LCM, and the three attackers create danger. The focus is on fast, forceful passes (with R1/RB and X/A you can execute them).
The goal is to get the center striker the ball and keep it in front of the goal. The other two offensive and central midfielders should then move forward to receive an assist from the striker. Then it’s just about finishing. Provided that, the goalkeeper does not make an incredible save, you should score some goals.
Use this tactic and instructions: The FIFA Analyst relies on these settings:
- Defensive
- Balanced
- 35 Width
- 55 Depth
- Offensive
- Balanced
- Direct Passing
- 40 Width
- Players in Box: 7
- Corners: 1
- Free Kick 1
Also change the following instructions (all others remain on “Standard”)
- Striker on “Stay forward”
- LF and RF centralize
- CM remains back and covers the center
- LCM is pushed forward and has complete freedom, RCM balanced
- RB stays back while attacking, LB balanced
Important: Adjust this instruction according to your player types. For example, if your RB is offensively stronger than the LB, a swap of instructions may be advisable.
4-1-2-1-2 (2) – Balanced formation for dribblers
This is what makes the formation special: YouTuber “RunTheFutMarket” (via YouTube) usually deals with topics like trading in FIFA 22, but also has some good tactic tips. He recommends the 4-1-2-1-2 (2).
He relies on high passing and dribbling values in attack. With quick passes, attacks should be initiated until the strikers can dribble into promising situations. To gain more width options, an attacking full-back who is strong in dribbling is also brought along.
Use this tactic and instructions:
- Defensive
- Balanced
- Width 40-45
- Depth 60-70
- Offensive
- Fast Build Up
- Direct Passing
- Width 50
- Players in Box 5
- Corners 2
- Free Kick 2
Player instructions (all others remain on “Standard”)
- Striker: Target option (so the STs stay in the box)
- CAM: Stay forward
- CMs: One stays forward, one balanced, covers middle
- RB/LB: One balanced, one stay back
3-4-1-2 – for complete offense
This is what makes the formation special: This lineup from FIFA pro “BorasLegend” (via YouTube) gives you numerous options in attack. The main goal here is to score more goals than the opponent – because defensively, the formation is not the best. But especially when you are behind and want to attack, this is a good option.
If you need a little more support from midfield defensively, you can switch to 3-5-2 instead.
Use this tactic:
- Defensive:
- Balanced
- Width 60
- Depth 45
- Offensive
- Balanced
- Possession
- Width 50
- 3 in the box
- Corners 2
- Free Kick 1
Use these instructions (all others on standard)
- Striker: Overlap defense
- CAM: Stay forward
- CDM: Stay back, cover center
- RM, LM: drop back for crosses into the box
Of course, there are plenty of other formations that could be worthwhile – depending on what playstyle you pursue.
