The Volta mode was supposed to be the next big thing in FIFA 20 , but the street mode just didn’t quite convince. Now there’s a second chance – will fans and Volta come together again in FIFA 21? At least there’s a chance, says MeinMMO author Max Handwerk.
Here’s the thing about Volta: Honestly, how many of you played more than 20 Volta matches in FIFA 20? For me, I can count the matches on about two and a half hands. The street mode in FIFA 20 just didn’t pull me in as much as I had thought.
Like many fans, I was really looking forward to Volta when the mode was presented during the FIFA 20 reveal about a year ago. After all, a return of FIFA Street, in whatever form, had long been on the community’s wishlist.
The excitement grew even more in the demo. While it wasn’t as crazy as FIFA Street, the gameplay was definitely fun. The problem: Volta felt even back then like something “for a quick play,” which was confirmed in the full game. The story mode didn’t motivate me as much as “The Journey” did in the previous installments.
And online? There was a lack of opportunities to play with friends. Volta was actually really fun with friends – you could play together on the couch as a duo. The fact that this gaming experience wasn’t implemented online led to a lot of criticism and contributed to the fact that Volta was pretty much over quickly. You can still see this today in the PlayStation trophies: The Volta trophies, such as for completing the story, are among the achievements that almost no one has in FIFA 20.
Volta takes a second shot in FIFA 21 – With Coop
This is what Volta is doing differently now: In the official updates for FIFA 21 (via EA), EA Sports announced that Volta returns this year and will be improved like the career mode. It’s once again about street football, once again in cages and on small pitches. The difference: This year you can experience it all online together.
“Volta teams” is the magic word. You can team up with up to 3 friends to play together in a 5-on-5 team-play.
Why you can’t just fill the entire team with real players like in Pro Clubs is unclear. However, this coop component alone is already a big step forward. Volta teams sound like a kind of Volta Pro Clubs Light. The ability to compete in street matches with friends was exactly what fans wished for from the mode.
If the mode offers a good incentive to improve players – maybe a competitive component, like a leaderboard or rewards – then Volta could become really exciting in coop. It’s conceivable that players might give the mode another chance as a team – I’m definitely in.
