The first players can FIFA 21 already download for PS5 and Xbox Series X. How does the upgrade to NextGen work?
What kind of upgrade is this? FIFA 21 is released in an enhanced version on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. This brings, among other things, a sleeker look, new animations, and faster loading times. The official launch of the version is December 4, 2020 – but some players can already download and play the upgrade.

The majority of players who bought FIFA 21 on the current-gen consoles [PS4 and Xbox One] can now download and play the version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Global access will follow as we prepare for the official launch on December 4.

Thus, the first players who already own the game in the “old” version can get the upgrade right now. In the community, such as on Reddit and Twitter, players are already reporting that they have successfully downloaded the new version and can play.
Others, however, are still reporting error messages when trying to load the game. It seems that it is indeed not yet available everywhere without problems. This should at the latest be the case on December 4.
On December 4, by the way, David Beckham will also enter the game, and the TOTGS event will also start.
This is how you download FIFA 21 for PS5 and Xbox Series X
This is how the upgrade works: The so-called “Dual Entitlement” gives every player who already owns FIFA 21 access to the respective next-gen version of the game. If they own it for PS4, they can download the PS5 version – and if they are already playing FIFA 21 on Xbox One, they can get the version for Xbox Series X.
If you only have the digital version of FIFA 21, the upgrade is simple:
- Visit your console’s store
- Select FIFA 21
- Navigate to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. If the new version is not directly displayed, you can find it under the options of the Standard Edition
- Start the download on your console.
However, keep in mind: It is possible that the update is not yet available for you and will only be unlocked at the official launch on December 4.
What about the disc version? If you own a FIFA 21 version on disc, you need it to download the new version. However, this will only be possible starting December 4.
Additionally, it is emphasized in the English FAQ on an EA site that you can have your disc purchase validated by EA Support to also use the upgrade on the digital PS5 or Xbox Series S, which do not have a drive.
What content can I transfer? Progress from FUT and Volta can be seamlessly transferred. The career mode, on the other hand, must be restarted on the new generation.
Crossplay between platforms is not available for the time being. If you want to play with your PS5 together with friends who only have the PS4 version, you will have to revert to the “old” version. However, you can switch between both versions at will.
