The Volta mode should receive important improvements in FIFA 21 to finally become the mode everyone wanted. What is the current status of virtual street football?
What was the problem with Volta in FIFA 20? The Volta mode was already the big new thing in FIFA 20. It brought street football to the forefront, allowed small-sided matches, and let players showcase skill moves.
In marketing for this spin-off, Volta was prominently featured – and that’s no surprise. After all, a kind of “FIFA Street mode” regularly appeared on players’ wish lists when it came to new features for the games. But as soon as FIFA 20 was released, Volta quickly became irrelevant.
Especially the lack of an online component was criticized. While you could mess around on the couch with two players, online matches were missing. There was a deficiency of content that motivated playing – and so the hype around Volta quickly fizzled out. You can also see this in the fact that the PS4 trophies for FIFA 20 around the Volta mode were extremely rarely achieved.
This is the current state of the Volta mode in FIFA 21
FIFA 21 was meant to be the second chance for the Volta mode. There were several changes intended to lure you back to small-sided games. A few examples:
- “Volta Teams” were introduced, bringing the much-desired co-op variant. This is probably the most important change.
- There are Featured Battles that offer rewards.
- Volta has become a bit crazier and brings in “Groundbreakers” who are stars in FIFA but are not footballers.
- The short story “The Debut” is meant to introduce you to the mode.
With these changes, the Volta mode should have brought you back on board. But as it stands now, it seems that this hasn’t really worked.
Here are the new statistics: If you look at the Volta topic alone in communities like reddit, it’s discussed significantly less than Ultimate Team or Career Mode. And also, the view of the PS4 trophies currently looks disappointing:
Again, it looks like hardly anyone has decided to dive deeper into Volta. Currently, all Volta trophies have a status of “Ultra-rare” and have been completed by very few players.
The task of obtaining 4 star players has been completed by at least 4.0% of players – but that is already the highest value. Even the end of the short story “The Debut” was reached by only 3.6%. Getting your own avatar’s rating above 90 was only achieved by just 0.4% – in essence, almost no one.
Conclusion: Of course, the PS4 trophies only show a snapshot of the player base – but based on these numbers, it appears that even the improvements to the mode have hardly made a difference. Volta still seems to have a tough time – will anything change in the future?
