Ultimate Team in FIFA 20 can only be played with top cards? Not at all! A player has played over 1,000 matches with Mario Gomez – and is diligently collecting goals. MeinMMO inquired: Why would someone do that?
Over 1,000 times Gomez: If you’re often on the FIFA subreddit, you’ve probably seen him here and there: The user “RusherRO” has made a name for himself as “The Gomez Guy” with his posts.
For months, the player, who is named Markus Kilzheimer in real life, has been posting his successes with the standard card of Mario Gomez. This card is not particularly strong compared to earlier versions of Gomez (and also current top cards). Nevertheless, Kilzheimer has 1,112 matches in Ultimate Team, which is already a huge amount. But Gomez also delivers: 1,115 goals and 269 assists are an unbelievable ratio.
Fans celebrate “the Gomez Guy”
Beloved by the community: On Reddit, the posts of the “Gomez Guy” gained more and more attention. The numbers increased with the matches played – when Kilzheimer recently reached 1,000 matches with Gomez, there were 4,800 upvotes (via Reddit).
“I didn’t expect that,” he told MeinMMO in an interview. Many people initially thought the matches came from Squad Battles – but they all came from online matches: “That’s out of the question, as I don’t really like that mode.” For challenges, he had removed Gomez from the team: “It was important to me because I wanted to see how far I can go online.”
Apparently, his new Reddit fans felt the same way:
“What made me happy and what one of my goals with the Reddit posts was, is that people use their favorite players. Sure, Gomez with 58 pace is an extreme case, but most people look away if the striker only has 75 pace.”
In FIFA, especially in the Weekend League, it’s often the case that you encounter extremely strong meta cards rather than players who simply enjoy playing with their favorite guys: “The more it made me happy when people wrote that they started using their favorite player. It showed me that the posts had some impact.”
Only Flashback Gomez can replace Gomez
Just a joke: The whole story originally started out of whim:
“Gomez is my absolute favorite player. Still, I did not intend to play with him for so long. It started when I jokingly asked in our FIFA group if I should play a Weekend League with Gomez. So I played one, and it was fun. The first one didn’t go great, of course, but it motivated me to adapt and optimize the card with certain chemistry styles.”
Now it’s going well. With a strong team that Kilzheimer built around Gomez, he has risen to Division 3. He usually finishes the Weekend League in Gold 2 – at least until recently: “On the weekend, Gomez scored me 52 goals for the first time this year in Gold 1.”
Of course, the best man in the club cannot be replaced. Except by himself perhaps: “Yes, a flashback card would definitely replace my gold card,” Kilzheimer admits. Reddit fans are hoping that this flashback card will come – and would wish that “The Gomez Guy” gets it first.
Some even hoped that EA might catch wind of the story and release the flashback card to celebrate the 1,000 matches. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen – but maybe 2,000 would be an option?
