FIFA 20: FUT is now better through objectives and rewards – But they create problems

In FIFA 20, players can chase the new season progress, and the events come with special objectives. Our author Max has taken a closer look at the topic: How good are the new objectives and rewards for Ultimate Team?

This is what makes FIFA 20 different: Objectives are nothing completely new in FIFA. In FIFA 19, we were already allowed to chase weekly objectives to secure rewards. However, in FIFA 20, the objectives take on greater focus.

For the first time, FIFA introduces a season progress. By completing various objectives, players can accumulate XP and level up. For leveling up, there are packs, special choreographies, and, at the very end, a special player card.

In the first season, players can choose between Zaha, Tolisso, and Lucas Vázquez at the highest level.

Objectives not just in season progress

Icon Swaps and Events are important: Additionally, there is a further change regarding the icon system. Through a swap system, players can earn tokens that can be exchanged for icons. The events also bring in players for whom objectives need to be completed.

In Ultimate Scream, for example, you could secure a good card from Mesut Özil by completing objectives.

The Icon Swaps require the completion of owner objectives

These icon and event objectives are sometimes very challenging – just like the highest weekly objectives. They require that you

  • need to rebuild your team
  • must use players with certain attributes
  • must score goals in specific ways.

Since many of the objectives have to be completed in the competitive mode Rivals, you often face weak teams built around objectives against typical top teams. And that is not easy.

Weekly Objectives – Improvement or Problem?

A personal assessment: I personally am a big fan of the new objectives in FIFA 20. This is especially true for the icon swaps system.

At first, I thought it would be a struggle to complete the objectives – but I really wanted an icon card for my team. Because getting them has been really difficult in previous games without a lot of luck or even more coins.

This time, however, you can earn icons. And I was surprised at how fun the objectives actually were.

I would never have thought about playing with a CSL-, MLS-, or Eredivisie team without the objectives. But now I got into it – and actually had a lot of fun. By now, Roberto Carlos is in my main team – having an icon at this point in the season was completely unthinkable for me in previous years.

Players like Roberto Carlos are strong reinforcements

That’s why I’m now taking all objectives. And the rewards are good: Scream Özil, for example, fits perfectly into my main team. Additionally, there were some decent packs as intermediate rewards for the objectives. And the tasks present new challenges: You had to score lob goals and use unusual players. Challenging – but ultimately also extremely satisfying when you succeeded.

Finally, the objectives also encourage you to try other modes. The really fun mode Mystery Ball would have probably overlooked had it not been for the corresponding objectives in FUT – and I would have really missed out.

There are always special cards in the tasks

This assessment is shared by many players in the community. However, there is also another side that is not a fan of the new objectives at all. And this side has some very good arguments.

This argues against the objectives: Reddit user “so grandiose” published a post on the topic “EA has ruined Rivals with objectives”. The reasons:

  • Players chasing objectives get angry when their opponent just wants to play a game and doesn’t care about objectives.
  • Players focused on a serious match are bothered by messages asking for help in fulfilling the objectives.

A problem is raised here that probably is not in line with the original objectives. Players who are only focused on fulfilling objectives subordinate the competitive nature of the Rivals mode. The game, which should actually be fun, is no longer enjoyable for either side.

The objectives require a restructuring of teams

On Reddit, there is often the suggestion that the particularly specific objectives should be kept out of the competitive modes. Objectives like “Win 10 Rivals games” certainly do not disrupt competition. However, if you desperately try to achieve a lob goal with a 70 pace striker, the game is significantly impaired.

Additionally, the objectives weaken your team due to the requirements. This can lead to a lot of frustration in Rivals when you simply cannot achieve the needed wins because the opposing teams are much stronger.

Those who want to fulfill objectives but also want to level up in the division may face challenges.

It will be difficult with some teams against top players like Mbappé

A personal conclusion: For me, the objectives remain a fun addition to Ultimate Team. This is partly because the division isn’t that important to me. I primarily enjoy being able to improve my team by fulfilling objectives.

At the same time, I try to fulfill the objectives more casually and do not focus my entire game on them. Therefore, I am not bothered when an opponent is not willing to let me score the needed goals – after all, it is a competition.

However, if I were to focus on the competition and also want to complete objectives, it would be a challenge. Therefore, it might be a good idea to have particularly specific objectives take place outside of Rivals. What do you think?
