That’s why the right setup is important: The formation of your team fundamentally determines the direction in which you play. For example, if you opt for a three-man defense in a 3-5-2 in favor of a strong offensive midfield, the direction is clear: You want to score goals.
Conversely, a defensive five-man defense indicates: You let the opponent come and rely on counterattacks through your full-backs and wingers. Which strategy best suits your style of play can only be known by you. But with all the options, it is difficult to find the best variant.

The pro opinion: With the new season, there are also new tactical tricks. We asked Marcel “DonChap28” Deutscher which formations he prefers to play with in this early phase. Marcel from L4K eSports is among the top 30 players in the world.
Here are his tips:
4-3-3 Offensive – the all-rounder
What does this setup offer? The forward-oriented 4-3-3 system is currently Marcel Deutscher’s favorite: “It offers a wide offensive game, and the playmaker joins the attack well.”
At the same time, this formation provides good support defensively: “Both midfielders stay defensively with the right instructions.”
Who is this formation for? This setup benefits all players who rely on a solid defense to attack securely from the front.
4-2-2-2 – The double strike
What does this setup offer? Unlike the 4-3-3, you can field two real forwards here. In addition, you have “two playmakers who come more from the flanks.” Defensively, you are also well-protected since you have two midfielders directly in front of the defense.
Who is this formation for? However, you should consider that in this setup you miss out on real wingers or midfielders on the flanks: The playmakers often orient themselves towards the center. Therefore, fast wing runs can be a bit more complicated for players who prefer counterattacks.
4-2-3-1 – The Christmas tree for ball possession
What does this setup offer? Although it’s not Christmas yet, if you’re looking for a compact formation, the “Christmas tree” could be your means of choice: “This is a very compact setup. It allows for a calm build-up play and a lot of ball possession:”
Who is this for? This formation is especially for players who focus on a dominant play style and not too much on fast counterattacks. With a total of five central midfielders, you have a clear advantage in the center. You can perfectly exploit this with playmaking midfielders and defensively aware midfielders.
This setup was also extremely popular last year: 26% of the Weekend League top 50 players used it.
Edit and create individual tactics
No adjustments necessary: By the way, Marcel Deutscher only uses individual tactics very limited with all three formations: Most settings remain at “Standard.” Only direct player instructions are modified: “For strikers, I configure them to run past the defense.”

These were previous formation tips
Already last year, the question arose, which formation is best suited. In FIFA 18 it turned out:
- The three-man defense was weak: It made you too vulnerable on the flanks.
- The five-man defense was good – but difficult: This setup required players on the right and left back who were strong both defensively and offensively. Especially for beginners, this formation was difficult.
- Compactness is important: Wide 4-3-3 formations were rather unpopular, as the center had to always be well covered. Possession football was the motto.
