The release date is here: The World Cup mode for FIFA 18 starts on May 29. Right in the TOTS season, EA announces a free DLC for the World Cup in Russia.
There are no additional costs. The “FIFA 18 World Cup” update will be available for free on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Mobile will follow in June.
What’s included in the World Cup mode for FIFA 18
From EA’s announcement about the World Cup mode, a lot can already be inferred.
All 32 qualified national teams along with their players will be included, and the 12 Russian stadiums will be fully licensed. There will also be the official match ball, jerseys, and other World Cup elements like team banners.
Additionally, there are various game modes:
- 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia: Here you can choose one of the 32 teams and replay a World Cup – up to the final in Moscow.
- Custom FIFA World Cup Tournament: Create your own World Cup tournament with all licensed national teams, including Italy, the Netherlands, or the USA.
- FIFA World Cup Kickoff: Normal offline kickoff mode with all teams and stadiums.
This is how the World Cup works in Ultimate Team mode
Of course, what’s most important must not be missing: The “FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team” mode:
- There will be brand new, playable icons in the World Cup mode (including Miroslav Klose).
- The chemistry system will be like in the WC mode from FIFA 14 – Instead of leagues, clubs, and nations, continents and nationality count.
- There will be new World Cup cards for all players with updated ratings.
- Dynamic items will also come, similar to PTG- or OTW- cards.
- For every pack you receive in the separate World Cup mode, you will also receive one in the regular FUT mode.
- Various modes such as SBCs, online and offline tournaments, and drafts await us.
- The coins and FIFA points apply across modes, so there will still be one account for both modes.
- In the World Cup mode, there is no transfer market; players can only be obtained through sets, SBCs, and tasks.

World Cup update for FUT resembles the “FIFA 14” World Cup mode
All information about the World Cup update we have so far indicates that the World Cup mode will behave similarly to FIFA 14.
The World Cup mode was previously separated from the regular Ultimate Team. There was no market; players could only be obtained through packs. The coins applied equally to both FUT modes.
The World Cup players could only be played in the World Cup mode; however, for each World Cup pack, you received a set in the regular FUT.
The chemistry system also seems to have remained unchanged. A Cristiano Ronaldo will link not only with Toni Kroos but also with Julian Draxler, as both come from the European association. Additionally, we will still receive icons this year – according to EA, even new World Cup legends that haven’t existed in FIFA 18 so far.
Why should one be excited about this? The World Cup mode was extremely popular in FIFA 14. There are many new possibilities in team building. Moreover, many more players got to play with stars like Messi or Ronaldo, as the drop rate was much more player-friendly. Together with the World Cup licenses, the mode was a refreshing change from the regular FUT.
