EA Sports released another trailer for the upcoming World Cup mode. It showcases the walkout animation, four brand new World Cup icons, the in-game menu, and the game modes.
The World Cup mode for FIFA 18 is free and will be released on May 29. It will be available in both the regular game and Ultimate Team.
The update will be available only for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch; PS3 and Xbox 360 will miss out.
The World Cup Icons: Familiar Faces and Four New Additions
Brand new icons were promised, and we are getting four of them. This includes the German World Cup record goalscorer Miroslav Klose.
These icons will be included in the World Cup mode:
- Pelé, Brazil
- Diego Maradona, Argentina
- Ronaldo, Brazil
- Lev Yashin, Russia
- Thierry Henry, France
- Lothar Matthäus, Germany
- Bobby Moore, England (New)
- Gary Lineker, England (New)
- Carles Puyol, Spain
- Ronaldinho, Brazil
- Laurent Blanc, France
- Jay-Jay Okocha, Nigeria
- Rui Costa, Portugal
- Deco, Portugal
- Luis Hernández, Mexico
- Miroslav Klose, Germany (New)
- Hidetoshi Nakata, Japan (New)

The faces already known from the regular FUT mostly retain the rating of their Prime card. This has led to discussions in the FIFA community about whether Luis Hernandez (90) really deserves a higher rating than Miroslav Klose (87).
The World Cup Menu and Game Modes
The trailer also shows the menu. The following game modes are depicted:
- Single Player Tournament
- Online Tournament
- Single Player Draft
- Online Draft
- Squad Building Challenges
This indicates that the SBCs are separate from the regular FUT and there will be dedicated World Cup SBCs. Thus, duplicates can likely be utilized, as there is no transfer market in World Cup mode where you could list duplicate players.
Another screenshot from the trailer shows a screen depicting Spain as the tournament winner along with three packs as rewards. This suggests that we will receive sets as rewards for tournament victories, perhaps even for individual games.

What exactly happens in the World Cup mode?
In FIFA 18, you can replay the World Cup in Russia with the World Cup mode. You can also organize your own tournaments or play a simple kickoff match with all licensed stadiums and national teams.
Big things are also expected for FUT 18: New icons, dynamic items, and various World Cup modes like SBCs, drafts, or tournaments will come to Ultimate Team.
The system is similar to that in the World Cup mode of FIFA 14:
- The coins are valid across modes, there is only one account for the “normal” FUT mode as well as the World Cup mode
- For every pack you buy in World Cup mode, you will receive one in the “normal” mode
- There is no transfer market; players can only be picked or obtained via SBCs
- The chemistry system is different: Nationality and continental affiliation count instead of club, league, and nationality
