“The Journey” is the first story mode in the history of the FIFA series, which is realized in FIFA 17 thanks to the Frostbite engine on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In this fresh and highly anticipated mode, you step into the shoes of young football talent Alex Hunter, who experiences the life of a professional footballer and matures into a world star.
What’s special about it: You don’t just play matches on the pitch, but also experience events off the pitch. You are in the locker room, in the player tunnel, at the manager’s office – even on the plane and in your own home. You discover completely new football worlds. And the synchronization is now also available in German.
In the FIFA 17 demo, you get a brief glimpse into “The Journey”. You get your first minutes as Alex Hunter in the Premier League and then have to conduct an interview. This creates excitement for more. But it also raises the question: How much is there actually left? How extensive will the story mode be?

16 hours of story in FIFA 17
The colleagues from the English site gamesradar were able to complete “The Journey” entirely. In an article, they present the most important milestones in the story. We would like to refrain from detailing these here.
Generally, the story is about you initially joining one of the 20 “Premier League” clubs and then playing a season – either in the starting lineup or from the bench.
Important figures are your best friend Gareth Walker and your grandfather Jim Hunter, with gamesradar stating that it becomes clear early in the story which direction the fun develops. The ending is said to be quite predictable – but this does not detract from the gameplay experience.
Overall, “The Journey” comprises a single season that took about 16 hours of gameplay.
However: While the milestones in the story are supposed to be fixed, you can shape the gaming experience individually with your decisions and performances on the pitch. It is likely worth playing the mode more than once.
What prize awaits at the end?
During the story, you receive five rewards that you can use in FUT 17. Most of the time, they are gold loan players who can play for a few matches in your Ultimate Team.
At the end of The Journey, there is a special prize: You receive a player card of Alex Hunter that you can permanently keep in your FUT team.
This continues Alex’s story in the “Ultimate Team” mode, where he can play alongside other world stars offline and online in your team.
