The top titles FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1 benefit enormously from the performance boost of the PS4 Pro. Frostbite shines on the new console.
The PS4 Pro has been on the market for a few days and numerous fans and experts are debating whether Sony’s new console is worth it and how much the gaming experience is enhanced by the performance boost. In recent days, the Pro has made headlines, as some games, like the new Skyrim, have reported frame rate drops. Sony is already investigating these issues.
Two titles that the Pro impressively upgrades are FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1. Both games from EA (Sports) utilize the Frostbite engine, which can achieve even better results with the Pro.
Virtual football has never looked so good
The tech experts from Digital Foundry examined both games and are impressed. In FIFA 17, the improvement in resolution is convincing: the football simulation runs on the PS4 Pro in native 4K. No upscaling is needed. The end result: a title that is already graphically strong – EA Sports used Frostbite for the first time in the FIFA series with FIFA 17 – becomes even better with the Pro and gets a significant boost.
Moreover, the level of detail increases: thanks to the higher resolution, more details on the field are visible, making the look “richer”, which also survives downscaling to 1080p. Top-down gameplay remains at a steady 60 FPS.
The war visually enhanced
Months before release, fans looked in disbelief at the graphics of Battlefield 1. In the trailers and gameplay videos, BF1 showed how impressive the future of the shooter genre can look. The PS4 Pro lifts the spectacle to a higher level.
The end result is fascinating. DICE brings a Pro mode that provides noticeable upgrades that shine on Ultra HD displays. However, some of the top-end improvements seen on the PC are not present. Therefore, one should not have too high expectations.
BF1 does not achieve a full 4K resolution. It lies between 1080p and 4K. Nevertheless, a massive boost in picture quality is observable when comparing the standard PS4 and PS4 Pro on a 4K TV. A clear visual upgrade.
Additionally, the higher GPU power is used not only to display a few more pixels but also to increase framerates and make the game run smoother. Moreover, textures and terrain are supposed to appear of higher quality.
Conclusion: In FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1, all PS4 Pro owners receive a significant upgrade – regardless of whether they have a 4K TV in their living room or not.
