In FIFA 17 we give you tips and tricks on how to shoot and save penalties correctly. You can practice and train these directly.
Have you extensively played FIFA 16 and confidently scored nearly every penalty? Then you’ll need to get used to FIFA 17 at first. The execution and the individual steps for penalties have been overhauled and require training before you master them.
In this guide, we provide you with instructions for penalties: How you can shoot them relaxed and save them with a bit of luck. In the following video by bPartGaming, you can also see the magic of the new penalties in moving images:
Run-up, Shot, Goal – Penalties Aren’t That Hard
The new penalty mechanic basically consists of three steps:
- Run-up: Press forward with the left stick to let the player approach.
- Charge the shot: With the shoot button (Circle or B), you now determine the power with which the shooter will strike. The rule is: The more power, the higher the ball flies. You can no longer adjust the height individually – it depends on the chosen shot power. In the following graphic, the arrows indicate the different power and height:

Tip: For a solid shot, you should fill the power to just under two and a half bars. If you hold the shoot button too long, the ball will end up in the clouds.
3. The Direction: After charging the shot, you can determine with the left stick in which direction you want to shoot. You can still change this direction until just before the shot.
Tip: Always hold the left stick pressed forward and just slightly move it to the left or right at the upper edge. This way, you can aim more accurately. Because you will shoot the ball far off if you press too hard in one direction. Show finesse!
These three steps need to be practiced. You can train penalties both in the arena and in skill games (shooting).
Tips and Tricks for Penalties – How to Score
To put the ball in the net, you need one important thing: luck. If the goalkeeper anticipates the corner, he can save the ball. However, you can enhance your penalty with the following tips:
- Select a penalty taker with good attributes: With R2 or RT, you can switch the shooter. Their attributes will be displayed. Pay special attention to high power and penalty attributes. These should be above 80. The higher the power, the harder the shot, and the higher the penalty value, the more precise the shot.
- Before starting your run-up, you can individually position your player with the right stick.
- When you run up and haven’t charged the shot yet, you can influence the running path with the left stick. This can confuse the opponent – or even yourself.
- With L2 and R2 or LT and RT, you can influence the run-up. With R2/RT, you sprint towards the ball. By briefly pressing L2/LT, you can delay the run-up and essentially feint the penalty. Both can also work after charging the shot. You can combine these as desired.
- For a high and hard penalty, you should charge to just under two and a half bars of power. But certainly not more. Practice is required here. The same applies to aiming left or right. Keep in mind that shooters with low penalty values may mishit the ball, even if you’ve aimed correctly and determined the power.
- For a lob, while charging the shot, you press the L1 or LT button. Just over 2 bars of power works well here. Since the lob comes towards the goal slowly, the goalkeeper has time to react if he stays in the middle.

Saving Penalties – Here’s How
You predominantly need luck here: On the one hand, to guess the right corner, on the other hand, for the goalkeeper to get the ball if he is in the right corner.
- With the left stick, you can position your goalkeeper – move him left and right.
- With the right stick, you determine in which direction the goalkeeper should jump.
- Additionally, while the shooter is running up, you can confuse the opponent with the right controller buttons (like A or X) by executing certain moves.
- In some situations, it is also worth waiting and not reacting until the shooter shoots. Maybe the ball will just roll slowly towards the goal. You can also easily thwart lobs this way.
Good luck!
