In the Live Letter, the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida, announced new information about the upcoming Patch 5.5. Additionally, there is now a trailer that you can watch.
New story quests in Patch 5.5: On April 13, the next update for FFXIV is scheduled. The first part of Patch 5.5 continues the story of the MMORPG and serves as a transition to the new expansion Endwalker, which will be released in autumn 2021.
In the new Live Letter, producer Yoshida revealed new details about the update. In the upcoming story section, players must prepare for a tough battle. The Telophoroi, led by Zenos and Fandaniel, are causing chaos and devastation in Eorzea.
The combined army of the Alliance seems to be overwhelmed, and things do not look good for the Warrior of Light and his friends. They must all stick together to prevent the end of the world.

In the course of the main scenario of 5.5, you will also be able to enter the new dungeon Paglth’an, which is located in the area of the Beast Tribe of the Amalj’aa.
The gear that you receive from the dungeon is also designed to match the look of the Amalj’aa. The new dungeon will support the Trust system and can be entered with NPCs.
The story of Patch 5.5 will be split into two parts. The first part will be released on April 13, and the second will follow at the end of May after the digital Fan Fest (May 15 and 16). This will conclude the story of Shadowbringers and transition to the new expansion Endwalker.
YoRHa – Dark Apocalypse Raid
What’s Coming in Patch 5.5: The third part of the Nier raid is titled “The Tower, Paradigm Breaker.” With this section of the 24-man raid, the story of YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse will be concluded.
In it, players will fight through the tower, some of them knowing it from Nier Automata, and discover the story behind the androids 2B, 2P, and 9S.
In the stream, Yoshida commented that the dev team put a lot of effort into the atmosphere of the raid to make it something special.
The first two Nier raids will also receive an update: the special companions from these raids will now be easier to acquire.
New Trial: Diamond Weapon
What’s Happening in Patch 5.5: The Diamond Weapon will be the last trial from the Woe of Werlyt series. Unlike the previous weapons like Emerald and Ruby, the quest for Diamond is about capturing the weapon rather than destroying it. This is evident from the Japanese naming of the quest.
You will fight against Diamond on a flying platform, and of course, you can fall and die. So you must be careful.
As usual, there will be difficulties in the fight against the Diamond Weapon: Normal and Extreme. In Extreme mode, new weapons (?), a new mount, and a crafting item will drop as rewards.
PS5 Beta Test
Alongside the release of Patch 5.5, the beta test for the PS5 version of FFXIV will also begin. It offers players:
- Shorter loading times
- 4K resolution
- High-resolution UI assets
- Support for haptic feedback from the DualSense controller
- New trophies
- 3D audio support
Players who already own FFXIV can directly download the PS5 version. New players have the option to download the PS5 version during the free trial. Participation is open to everyone.
If no major bugs occur, the beta will end quickly, and players will be able to switch to the final version. The upgrade is free for PS4 players of FFXIV.

PC players will also enjoy the high resolution and new UI elements.
Resistance Weapons
The last upgrade for the Resistance Weapons will come with Patch 5.55 at the end of May. However, some new information about it was presented in the Live Letter. Players will be able to explore a new area called Zadnor, located at the border between Bozja and Dalmasca.
This time, no Rank 15 of the Resistance will be required to participate in the content. The new rank cap will be raised to 25. More information includes:
- Adjustments for duels
- New engagements within the zone
- The Resistance Weapons will be slightly better than the weapons from the current epic Eden raid
- The secondary stats will be freely selectable
Further content of Patch 5.5
Apart from the major contents mentioned above, Patch 5.5 will also bring a number of smaller updates, adjustments, and fixes. Here’s an overview:
- Reconstruction of Ishgard: The work is complete, and now it will be celebrated. Celebrations will happen for one day every 2 days. On the day of celebration, events will occur every 2 hours.
- The events are similar to normal FATEs for collectors and crafters. There will be rewards for participating in the events.
- The Ishgard housing will come with Patch 6.1 after the release of Endwalker.
- New upgrades for the Resistance Weapons will come in Patch 5.55
- Balance adjustments for jobs like Dragoon and Warrior. No major adjustments, just light changes to the numbers. No nerfs, no buffs above 2%
- New armors and rewards for PvP
- The next dream trial. Titan will be replaced by Leviathan
- New recipes for crafters
- Convenience updates for collectors. Spawn points of gathering spots will be displayed via the gathering menu on the map, and waters will indicate which fish they contain.
- Count Charlemend de Durendaire as a new NPC for delivery requests
- Updates for the mini-game Triple Triad
- The Explorer mode will get new dungeons that you can enter alone and take screenshots in
- More small updates and cosmetic items
More detailed information will come with the patch notes, which will be published shortly before the update on April 13.
