To help his 7-year-old daughter learn, this father gave more than just tutoring. He even developed a game that is soon to be released on Steam.

What kind of game is this? The educational game resembles a classic rogue-like like Slay the Spire and is cleverly named “Super Algebrawl”. Here, the basic mathematical operations are to be practiced.

Math tutoring in a different way
Which gamer doesn’t know it from their childhood? You would really love to keep gaming, but your parents keep interrupting and want you to learn something for school instead. A clever trick to combine both is educational games. These not only grant more time at the PC – perhaps you actually learn something useful.
Benjamin Soule probably thought the same. He developed the educational game “Super Algebrawl” to help his 7-year-old daughter with her math learning.
Who is this? Benjamin Soule is part of the developer duo “Punkcake Délicieux”, which, according to their Steam page, has set out to develop a game every month.
Among them, the most popular is the roguelike strategy game Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate with currently 93% positive ratings on Steam, with almost 4,000 reviews.
How did the game come about? On X, formerly Twitter, Soule reported that he created Super Algebrawl in November 2023 for his daughter. Later, he decided to actually publish the game with “Punkcake Délicieux”.
The game is now nearly finished and already has a Steam page.
Mathematical puzzle as a magical wild boar king
But how does Super Algebrawl work? As a wild boar king with magical mathematical powers, you control your animal subjects.
Each of these little animals has an associated number. These numbers must then be mathematically combined, for example added or multiplied, to match the opponents’ numbers as closely as possible.
However, it is important to be clever. Because every companion that is not used at the end will turn against you and deal damage to the wild boar king.
Throughout the game, more operations, animal companions, and special abilities will be added. One round should take about 30 minutes.
Surprisingly, it looks quite fun, especially for an educational game. And a bit of practice in mental arithmetic has surely never harmed anyone, right?
Even though the genre of educational games is not necessarily very prominent in the gaming world, one should not underestimate their influence. For example, 51 years ago, an educational game for children was supposed to teach responsibility and the history of the pilgrims, thereby arguably creating the genre of survival games: 51-year-old educational game for history is actually the first real survival game – being released as a remake on Steam
