The rogue-like shooter Risk of Rain 2 has a positive rating of 96% on Steam and several thousand players. What makes Risk of Rain 2 so good and what does the community say about it?
This is Risk of Rain 2: Risk of Rain 2 is a rogue-like shooter that has been in Early Access since March 28, 2019. The full release is set to occur later this year.
While there isn’t a large story in RoR2, there is a small background narrative. You crash your spaceship on an alien planet and try to escape.
This is your task in Risk of Rain 2
This is how RoR2 plays: Alone or with up to 4 players, you choose your hero and jump into the fight. Your goal is to find a teleporter in each level, activate it, and defeat a boss. As time progresses, the difficulty level steadily increases.
The difficulty level becomes so hard that it is eventually simply referred to as “Impossible” or “HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.” More and more enemies stand in your way, which should be prioritized differently depending on their type.
This is how you become tougher: With each kill, you earn gold, which you need to buy items at machines, open chests, or repair support drones. The items increase your attack values, defense, or grant you other special effects. You can acquire 75 pieces that enhance your hero for the duration of the round. The drones assist you in battle with additional damage or healing.
The game doesn’t have an ending, but one is planned for release. Currently, you keep fighting and switch levels using the teleporter until your hero ultimately dies at the hands of the masses of enemies.
Throughout all the mayhem, you level up your hero, complete challenges, and unlock new characters or skills for the next rounds.
The cost of Risk of Rain 2: Currently, you can purchase the title for €19.99 via Steam or for €29.99 for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Risk of Rain 2 is also part of our Top 10 MMOs and online games for under €20.
Almost 100% positive rating – the community is thrilled
Approximately 79,000 positive votes stand against only 3,000 negative votes when all reviews on Steam are considered. This is already an outstanding achievement, but why is the community celebrating Risk of Rain 2 so much?
This is why Risk of Rain 2 is so good
Risk of Rain is a sidescroller rogue-like shooter that delighted the Steam community back in 2013. Part 2 doesn’t reinvent the formula and offers much of what the first part did. The biggest innovation is the update from 2D to 3D.
Good for beginners: The easy entry is suitable for new players, the gameplay is very intuitive: run and shoot. Nevertheless, Risk of Rain 2 is not an easy game and offers a challenge for experienced players on higher difficulty levels. The many items, the different characters and their skills, as well as the various enemies, need to be mastered.
This is one of the biggest incentives: Since it is a rogue-like, every death means the end. Players want to improve with each round, and similar to titles like Dark Souls, this incentive is a significant part of the game. Each round also plays differently. While the levels are the same, the types of enemies and positions of chests and teleporters are random.
For an early access title, Risk of Rain 2 is doing very well. There are no performance drops or game-breaking bugs. New content is added regularly, and the developers listen to the community’s feedback. Adjustments to the game balance are continuously made to provide players with the smoothest gameplay experience possible.
This is what the community says
This is what the positive votes say: 96% positive votes paint a clear picture. Players appreciate the easy entry, the relaxed gameplay, and also the challenge that arises during the game. Casual and hardcore players alike will find joy here.
- Steam user Steady says: “It’s crazy how an early-access game manages to run so smoothly and offer so much replay value.”
- Steam user Mr.AwesomeKarateDocotor says: “The best EA title I’ve ever played. So far, I haven’t found any significant bugs, and it runs completely smoothly. Cool gameplay and extremely well-designed combat. It’s fun, fun, fun – and even more fun with friends.”
- Steam user Xixiac gives a more detailed description: “Risk of Rain 2 is one of the best roguelikes I’ve ever played. The characters are great, the items are great, the levels are great, and the devs continue to work hard. However, there are some things to note: It’s hard. There’s a lot to unlock. It’s simple, but beautiful in terms of visual style.”
This is what the negative votes say: However, there are also players who do not find Risk of Rain 2 as cool. Especially the monotony that sets in over time causes boredom in the community:
- This is what Steam user SmallBay writes: “I like the game. But after a few hours of amazing experiences, where I unlocked all characters and some abilities, it started to get boring.”
Other players report that multiplayer is almost unplayable without friends. One player serves as host, and when they lose interest and go offline, the game is over for everyone. Players with high ping ruin the flow of play, and in general, the multiplayer community is said to be rather toxic.
For whom is RoR2 suitable? The title is worth it for all rogue-like fans looking for a title that can be played well in between. Even rogue-like newcomers can take a look at Risk of Rain 2 and gradually find their way into the genre.
Those who play solo or with friends will definitely have fun with Risk of Rain 2. However, you have to expect a bit of grind and monotony, as is typical for rogue-likes.
