Whether in modern retail WoW or the classic “Wrath of the Lich King” variant of WoW Classic: Gold is always useful.
You need it to buy consumables, special reputation rewards, or to unlock the fastest mount speeds. Especially now in WotLK Classic, gold is needed to purchase good gear and fancy upgrades or glyphs. But how do you farm efficiently? What can be done to quickly earn gold?
Daily Quests
Risk: None
Reward: Medium
There are extremely many daily quests, also called “Daily Quests”, in Wrath of the Lich King. Especially in Icecrown and the Storm Peaks, you can find plenty of daily quests after completing the primary quest lines. At first glance, these quests may not seem lucrative, as they often offer rewards of 15 to 30 gold – but it adds up.
If you complete all available daily quests in Icecrown, it takes – depending on your equipment and playstyle – between 50 and 90 minutes. The yield is around 400 gold pieces, plus a few additional coins from enemy drops. An income of about 400 gold per hour is quite solid and especially reliable. You always know how much gold you will have at the end of your run.
If you are looking for a reliable method, make sure to complete these quests – the daily quests on the airship alone yield a nice chunk of gold.
A nice side effect is that you also earn reputation with factions from which you may want rewards.
Farming Herbs and Ore

Reward: Medium – High
This is probably the classic way of gold farming and still one of the most lucrative – collect various herbs and ores with a herb gathering or mining character.
A “danger” here is the possibly high competition – be it from other players or bots. If an area is significantly “over-farmed”, then even the best farming routes will not help, and you will be able to gather little herbs. You clearly have an advantage if you can play at unusual times outside of “prime time”. Those who farm herbs and ores late at night or early in the morning usually encounter far fewer players.
How much you earn depends on the market situation on your server. However, you can earn between 200 and 1,300 gold per hour, as herbs and ores are always in demand. On the side, you also farm some of the “raw” materials, which can also achieve a very high price.
A good place for this is the Sholazar Basin, as you can find four different herbs there and also some raw materials. Fly especially along the rivers when looking for herbs, or circle the edge of the area when looking for ores.
Farming Old Dungeons
Risk: Low
Reward: Medium
At first glance, it may seem counterintuitive to visit old dungeons, but especially in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, it is really worth it. Some classes – like Death Knights – are indeed capable of farming the dungeons from “The Burning Crusade” alone. Particularly in Hellfire Peninsula or the dungeons in Auchindoun, you can earn good gold this way.
Depending on equipment and playstyle, you can earn 400 to 600 gold per hour here. Most of the gold will come from green and blue drops.
In “modern” WoW, this method is, by the way, no longer as lucrative, as the value of items from old expansions has been reduced. In Wrath of the Lich King Classic, you can still benefit from the full price of the items.
Riskier Methods: The Auction House
Apart from the relatively safe methods, there are still some ways to hoard a lot of gold – but they involve risks and often require a high starting capital. You could try to “flip” various items in the auction house – for example, you buy crafting materials, create a desired item with a profession, and then sell it for a profit. At least in theory.
For beginners, this option is not recommended, since you must always keep an eye on the current market prices and often adjust strategies. However, those who feel confident can earn even more gold through auction house dealings.
