What leads to the ratings and what do the critics say?

The open world, the game’s presentation, the fundamental game mechanics with the switch between stealth and shooting, and tinkering with weapons are praised.

However, criticism is directed at the story, which is said to be very one-dimensional, the difficulty levels, many of which are too easy, and the fact that much in the game is artificially stretched. A lack of innovative new features and ideas is also repeatedly criticized.

“A game you will like without loving it” – MGG Spain

The test from Millenium.gg was written by editor GalleGutsito. He gives Far Cry 6 a score of 80 and lists positive and negative aspects. Criticism mainly centers on Ubisoft’s low willingness to take risks, the weak AI, and occasional bugs that have occurred:

Ubisoft wants to please everyone with a Far Cry 6 that screams for much riskier decisions. It fulfills most playable decisions with its own touch, but neither the story nor its great villain live up to what we expect from a major revolutionary adventure. A game you will like without loving it, and that destroys the special elements that could have made it the best Far Cry in history.

“Far Cry 6 is a fun open-world shooter with great weapon variety, but it gets bogged down in its own feature overload” – GameStar

Our German colleagues at GameStar give the game a score of 77/100. Each gets 4 stars for presentation, game design, and handling. The story and balance only receive 2 stars each.

The fundamental game mechanics and the game world function exceptionally well and entertain until one questions the purpose behind it. […] Far Cry 6 is a thoroughly toothless game that only gives me an illusion of gameplay freedom. In reality, I should not feel restricted. I can do everything, but what I do is completely irrelevant. The next task awaits regardless. Nothing has weight or consequences. 

I find it laudable how accessible and versatile Ubisoft designs its open worlds, that there are modes for the colorblind, a story mode for beginners, and countless ways to engage or tackle missions. But what ultimately comes out of it is primarily shallow and extensive rather than a deep gaming experience. […].

Jorden Forwads, Deputy Editor at PCGamesN, gives Far Cry 6 a score of 7/10. He criticizes mainly the lack of innovation in storytelling and gameplay.

The foundations of the series have been reworked to provide exciting and satisfying new gameplay. However, not all revisions have a positive effect. Unfortunately, it is the complete lack of change in narrative and structure that really holds Far Cry 6 back.

“No revolution in gameplay, but a successful guerrilla adventure” – PC Games

Editor Matthias Dammes has tried Far Cry 6 and gives the game an 8/10. Praise is given for the beautiful game world, where there is much to discover, as well as the gunplay. Criticism, however, is directed at the lack of innovation and an anticlimactic story.

Far Cry 6 has delivered impressively. The game pleases me in many aspects much more than its predecessors. The story and its characters are interesting. It doesn’t shamelessly delve into the box of madness this time. Especially antagonist Anton Castillo makes a much stronger impression on me than Joseph Seed, the twins, and Pagan Min combined. This may also be due to the excellent performance of Giancarlo Esposito. In terms of gameplay, I like that Ubisoft has made their usual open-world elements more subtle. All the stuff on the map is still there, but it is no longer presented with a sledgehammer.
