Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is the latest installment in the popular Borderlands franchise and comes with many innovations. Shortly after release, however, some players encounter an unpleasant bug that resets many hours of gameplay. Allegedly, all platforms are affected, including PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
What kind of bug is it? It concerns a problem with cloud saving. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands apparently saves progress in both a cloud and on the local console or PC.
If the two save points no longer match, a conflict occurs along with a message. When starting the game, you will then be asked whether you want to load the cloud save or the local one.
If you choose the wrong save file here, it is possible that all of your progress from the last session has been deleted. Gaming expert Paul Tassi from Forbes states that he fell from level 22 back to level 16.
The well-known Destiny streamer Gothalion mentions on Twitter that he lost 8 hours of progress. He didn’t receive any prompt asking which save file he wanted to take. His progress was simply reset.
Where does the bug come from? The ShiFT servers had major problems at the release of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and still seem to be overloaded. Through these servers run, among other things, the crossplay of Wonderlands as well as the connection to your account.
If there are connection problems, it may happen that no proper cloud saving is performed. Only the local backup file is then current, although issues can also arise here.
Cloud issue likely affects PlayStation, Xbox, and PC
Who is affected? According to Tassi and numerous complaints on social media and Reddit, all versions of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands are affected. The problem apparently does not only lie with Epic (PC), but originates from the publisher’s side.
However, the reports are relatively rare. There do not seem to be too many affected individuals, or the rollback is so minor that it goes unnoticed. However, if you have the issue, it can end up being quite frustrating.
A larger problem is that some players are not asked at all. MeinMMO reader projectneo, for example, reports a rollback of 8 hours without the option to select a save file.
How can I protect myself? If you are asked which save file you want to use, do not necessarily choose the newer one, but rather the local file. This should normally have saved the progress correctly. However, there is no guarantee!
You can also disable cloud backups in the settings, such as in the Epic Games Launcher. This should at least help prevent the issue. If your progress has already been lost, there is likely little you can do.
Tassi also advises to quit Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands more frequently to save manually more often outside of the automatic saving. Whether that helps, we have yet to verify. It seems that we will have to wait until the developers fix the issue.
There are currently also issues in the game’s coop mode. The multiplayer aspect of the Borderlands series is actually one of the most praised features, but Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands seems to have overlooked something here:
