On September 27, the new expansion Wrath of the Lich King was released for WoW Classic. Two weeks after release, fans are discussing whether the game is still enjoyable and find many reasons for it.
This is the status of WotLK Classic:
- Since September 27, tens of thousands of players have been playing WotLK Classic again. Since release, there are still occasionally long queues to play on the big servers.
- On October 7, the first 3 raids: Naxxramas, the Obsidian Sanctum, and the Eye of Eternity opened. Only an hour after release, all three were defeated.
- While some players rush through the endgame content, others take their time and enjoy the expansion they fell in love with years ago.
The rush for WotLK Classic was immense. The first ship to Northrend was packed. We were there live:
How well WotLK Classic is received: A few days after release, there was a major discussion about why Wrath of the Lich King is actually the best expansion ever. Some players said: WotLK feels like a drug to them. They enjoy the simplicity.
Now, two weeks after release, fans are discussing what they enjoy about WotLK Classic and whether they are still playing it. A corresponding thread on reddit collected over 1,100 comments in just a few hours.
While many simply praise that they enjoy the game or even rediscovered their love for World of Warcraft, others explain that they have not even reached level 80 yet. But that’s okay: while some race through the game, they take the little free time they have.
“The game hits a spot that no other does”
This is what players say: The user jschligs explains: “I’m married and have kids. I play every night with friends I haven’t played with in years when they [the family] are in bed. I am having a blast.”
Many other users share similar experiences. They don’t have as much time to invest in the game as they used to, but that’s not a problem. WotLK does so much right even in the leveling phase that players enjoy spending time there. The storytelling is often praised, and almost every zone has fans who love it.
Others are surprised that leveling is so strenuous – it felt easier in the past. But even with little time available, one can have a lot of fun in WotLK.
By the way, you don’t have to have played WotLK to enjoy it:
However, a major discussion remains the gap between performance-oriented “elite” players and the “casuals.” Some of the best players and those who emulate them are constantly on the lookout for the one percent that can still improve them.
The community has a rather divided opinion on this, as the behavior affects “normal” players on some servers, by not inviting them to groups. One user summarizes the situation in a meme:
However, looking into the threads, it seems that a larger part of the community is taking the game more casually. Many guilds have not yet started active raiding, and a large part of the players still need to reach level 80.
Many have set themselves the goal of taking a closer look at the raids this time, spending more time in them than they did back then. And for that, they don’t need to rush; the first phase is still long enough.
It’s also not too late to get started. Now is actually a better time for casual players to start since the large mass of players has already spread out:
